Wrexham’s sole focus for the rest of the season is now about gaining League One promotion after they bowed out of the EFL Trophy on penalties.

Darren Ferguson wanted to disrupt a ‘Hollywood’ final before the match and his side did exactly that as they came from two goals down to win in the shoot-out.

Arthur Okonkwo had a rush of blood in conceding a penalty with approximately 15 minutes left on the clock and allowed the Posh a way back into the game.

Wrexham fans were furious with match officials during the shoot-out as it appeared Jed Steer was off his line in saving Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee’s efforts. However, the Red Dragons will be furious at throwing away the chance to get to Wembley.

Wrexham’s midfield dominated again in EFL Trophy defeat

Midfield has been a problem area in recent months for Phil Parkinson and the view is that George Dobson and Matty James struggle to play together.

It led to Andy Cannon coming in to the side in the win over Mansfield Town however, Wrexham have confirmed Cannon has suffered an acl injury.

Wrexham found themselves dominated in the midfield area once again, surrendering the majority of possession and on the back foot for large parts of the game.

Before the Red Dragons opened the scoring through Modou Faal, the game was spent entirely in the Wrexham half and the goal came against the run of play.

Peterborough were more than deserving of the victory on the balance of the overall play and despite Parkinson ringing the changes, the lack on control on the ball was evident yet again and is a real concern moving forward.

Elliot Lee returns after injury lay off

Coming on as a second half substitute, Lee made his first appearance since the EFL Trophy quarter final victory over Bolton following a road traffic accident.

Lee issued a statement over his fitness and returned to the side in a midfield role with around 25 minutes remaining in the match.

With Cannon’s absence it could now be the opportunity for Lee to feature in a regular run of games for the Red Dragons in the advanced midfield run in order to control the game.

Parkinson will have been concerned how much of the ball Peterborough had and knows that allowing quality opposition to dictate the game will only spell trouble for his side in the promotion run in.
