Wrexham have already spent big money this summer, but Phil Parkinson has secured another significant investment.

Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds certainly have no plans to just sit in the Championship and bask in the glory of three straight promotions.

The Premier League remains the long-term goal at Wrexham, and we have seen some significant investment this summer.

Wrexham have secured nine summer signings, headlined by Nathan Broadhead’s club-record move from Ipswich Town last week.

More spending could come, with Wrexham chasing Wales midfielder Jordan James from Rennes, while West Ham United’s Andy Irving is on Phil Parkinson’s wish list.

Callum Doyle saw Wrexham’s warning shot under Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds

A midfielder certainly seems to be wanted, but Wrexham have now snapped up a new defender.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Wrexham were closing in on signing Callum Doyle from Manchester City.

Doyle has now finalised his move to Wrexham, penning a four-year deal at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham will fork out up to £8million for Doyle, bringing the England Under-21 international in as a left-sided central defender.

This is a huge deal for Wrexham, and Parkinson has landed a player who actually saw the first major warning shot from the Red Dragons first-hand.

Wrexham missed out on promotion in the first season under Mac and Reynolds, while also failing to go on a significant FA Cup run.

The 2022-23 season was different, though, as not only did Wrexham clinch promotion to League Two, but there was also a run to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

To get there, Wrexham beat Coventry City in the third round to set up a fourth-round clash with Sheffield United.

It was one thing to rack up wins in the National League with major backing, but winning away at a Championship club inside 18 months of the Hollywood takeover was a real warning shot.

At the time, you could put it down to just one game, but Wrexham have now joined Coventry in the Championship, and that day proved that Wrexham could seriously challenge against perceivably ‘bigger’ clubs.

Doyle was on loan at Coventry at the time and featured on that night, coming on as a second-half substitute after Jonathan Panzo’s red card.

Doyle watched first-hand as Wrexham sealed a 4-3 victory on the road and somewhat upset the apple cart, providing a warning to Championship clubs which has now been fulfilled.

Callum Doyle ready to settle down

Doyle has been highly regarded at City, but first-team opportunities in Pep Guardiola’s winning machine have not come easily.

In fact, Doyle has now been loaned out four times in recent years, joining Sunderland, Coventry, Leicester City and Norwich City to aid his development.

Now approaching 22, Doyle is ready to settle down and find a permanent home away from City.

That was always going to come at a cost, with Doyle regarded as one of the most promising young English defenders around right now.

Wrexham have now secured a serious coup, and Doyle will be desperate to prove his worth in the coming years after four straight seasons out on loan.
