Steven Fletcher has announced his retirement from football after he was released from Wrexham this summer as the club prepared for the Championship and did not have him as part of their plans for the upcoming campaign.

The striker has suggested that Rob Mac ‘begged’ Fletcher to stay at Wrexham, with the former Scottish international just to be released two days later.

He was an important part of the Red Dragons who won promotion from League Two and League One, which has seen Humphrey Kerr pen an emotional message to the retiree.

This will be due to the impact he had upon the Welsh side over the past two seasons, with one game likely to stick out in the memories of fans as he helped secure a dramatic result.

Steven Fletcher and Paul Mullin star in dramatic 3-3 draw with Crewe Alexandra

On this day two years ago, September 30, 2023, Steven Fletcher was the hero for Wrexham as he helped them snatch a late point against Crewe Alexandra.

Crewe entered the break 2-1 to the good after Micky Demetriou gave them the lead in the 24th minute before Paul Mullin equalised, only for Chris Long to convert a penalty in stoppage time of the first half.

The Red Dragons had been reduced to 10 men before the Mullin equaliser in the 40th minute, as Ryan Barnett had been shown a red card four minutes earlier.

Wrexham made the perfect start to the second half as Paul Mullin equalised just two minutes after the restart, only for Shilow Tracey to score Crewe’s third in the 65th minute to make it 3-2.

Steven Fletcher would then enter the field of play and have a decisive role in the game, as he scored the equaliser with just seconds remaining, with his goal coming in the 95th minute to share the points and make it 3-3.

The response to Steven Fletcher’s retirement

Fletcher has been inundated with messages of well wishes since announcing his retirement from football, with players from each club he has represented sending them.

James McClean has taken to Instagram to post a story about the former striker’s retirement, with the pair having played for both Stoke City and Wrexham together.

He said: “Happy retirement, Steven Fletcher.

“Some career, some player, above all some man.”

Ollie Palmer sent a message to Fletcher, also on social media, as the player sets off into the sunset after a successful career.

Ryan Barnett was another of many to post on social media about the decision from the former Scottish international.

He said: “Happy retirement, Steven. One of the best. Jeezy Peeps.”
