Six years before he arrived in North Wales, one former Wrexham star was pitted against Barcelona stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta in the Champions League.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has been brutal with his departures this summer, having not let any sentimental values get in the way of cutting down on the squad.

The last few months have seen Ollie Palmer leave Wrexham permanently, while Paul Mullin also moved to Wigan Athletic on loan.

Deadline day saw a flurry of further departures, with Jacob Mendy and Tom O’Connor signing for League One side Peterborough on loan.

Eoghan O’Connell has also left Wrexham, bringing an end to a two-and-a-half-year stay at the club for the Irishman.

O’Connell leaves with his head held high, having been instrumental in Wrexham’s meteoric rise from the National League. He was always expected to be a key player for Parkinson’s side, especially after the experience he had conjured up in his career, including a cameo against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Wrexham legend Eoghan O’Connell once played Barcelona in the Champions League

As a youngster, Eoghan O’Connell came through the ranks at Celtic, where he played a handful of games before becoming a journeyman, playing for various EFL clubs.

During his time at Celtic, he got the incredible opportunity to play 22 minutes at the Nou Camp against Barcelona, being pitted against the formidable attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

O’Connell also faced off with the legendary Andres Iniesta during his cameo, who also came off the bench.

It was a difficult evening for the Scottish side, who slumped to a 7-0 defeat against the Spanish giants, with Messi notably getting a hat-trick.

What Eoghan O’Connell said about his cameo vs Barcelona

Eoghan O’Connell spoke about his chance to play against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, having noted the surprise around making his Champions League debut against such a historic club.

“I was a little surprised, actually,” O’Connell previously told the Bury Times.

“I travelled over there but didn’t expect to be in the squad because I hadn’t been involved for a couple of weeks. We trained on the ground the night before and were taking it all in.

“I found out I was on the bench on the night and when I was called on I was surprised. It was already 5-0 by that time so it wasn’t ideal, but personally for me as a young player, looking back, it was a good experience.”

The former Wrexham man was a revelation when he arrived at the club, and while he is now destined for pastures new, Red Dragons supporters will never forget the difference he made in the previous three seasons, playing an incredible role in the three successive promotions.
