Ollie Palmer has ended his time at Wrexham and has now explained why he decided to join Swindon Town.

Three and a half years after joining from AFC Wimbledon, the 33-year-old called time on his Wrexham career in late August.

Ollie Palmer had his contract terminated, allowing him to join a new club for free.

Palmer won an award in his last appearance for the Dragons, which saw him score two goals to help Wrexham come from 3-1 down to beat Hull City in the Carabao Cup.

Now, the striker, who was part of all three promotions during the Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac era, has opened up on why he moved to Swindon from North Wales.

Why Ollie Palmer left Wrexham for Swindon Town

Sheffield Wednesday were linked to Palmer during the closing stages of the 2025 summer transfer window.

They were not the only club in for the Wrexham centre-forward, however.

It’s understood that at least 10 clubs wanted to sign Palmer this summer. But he has now explained why he wanted to depart the Racecourse for Swindon.

He said, as per BBC Sounds: “It was just numerous things really. I just had several boxes that needed to be ticked personally for me.

“In all honesty, it needed to be a southern club. It needed to be an ambitious club. And, for me, both those things, both those boxes were ticked. They were the two most important for me personally.

“Obviously, you start kind of going through the other options that you have and I just felt like, when I signed, I said that Swindon’s a proper club. It’s just a proper football club. So for me, I think some people might have been surprised at the choice with other clubs that I had but for me it was quite an easy decision once I’d met the manager and I also met with the owner.”

Why Ollie Palmer was dropped by Wrexham

The Englishman’s exit comes after Phil Parkinson dropped Palmer in late January 2025.

He explained why earlier this summer, saying: “When we brought two strikers in January, we always knew we’d have a surplus of, and people would find themselves out of the 18-man squad because you can only have seven substitutes.

“That’s the way it is. Mulls didn’t just quite get the goals, which he normally does, and I thought he had a good start to the season, and his general performances were decent, but the goals just didn’t come, and we just needed more from the player in that number nine role.

“So Paul and Ollie found themselves out of the 18-man squad. It’s a harder level than we’d been operating at. So, both good lads, really good lads, have carried on training well for us. But it’s tough, it’s a competitive division, to make the step up is not easy.”

Palmer has commented on being dropped by Wrexham this week, explaining his feelings on the matter.

He stated: “I didn’t feature in the league this season, unfortunately. But I’m probably not as fit as what I was arriving here as what I was in pre-season, to be totally honest.

“It’s just the way it is, it is football. We had a huge squad that the club invested heavily, and absolutely can’t begrudge it. I walked in at Wrexham football club one Monday night and started the next day without meeting anyone, so it’s a fast-moving football club.”
