Championship boss coy as Wrexham hold talks to sign benched striker, pre-season friendly snub explained

Wrexham recently signed four players in a flurry of transfer activity, but Phil Parkinson may still chase further additions ahead of the new Championship season.

What a busy last week or so for Wrexham.

When Liberato Cacace signed for Wrexham last Friday, few could have predicted that there would be three more additions on board just a week later.

George Thomason joined Wrexham on Monday, before Josh Windass made it three signings in a matter of days, joining on a free transfer.

Lewis O’Brien then came in on Thursday, completing an exciting move from Nottingham Forest to seemingly round off the influx of deals.

It’s now less than two weeks until Wrexham face Southampton on the opening day of the Championship season, and Phil Parkinson may yet have more deals in mind.

Sheffield United boss on Kieffer Moore to Wrexham

Another striker may still be in Parkinson’s thoughts, and The Sheffield Star claim that Wrexham are keen on signing Kieffer Moore from Sheffield United.

The giant Welsh international would certainly suit Parkinson’s penchant for target men, and Sky Sports claim that talks between Wrexham and Sheffield United are ongoing.

Moore was named in the Blades squad as they faced off against Chesterfield on Saturday, but was one of just two outfield substitutes who weren’t brought on.

Blades boss Ruben Selles was asked about Moore after the final whistle, and told The Sheffield Star that he simply felt the striker wasn’t ready to play.

Selles was asked directly about a potential approach from Wrexham, but was coy on Moore’s future as he admitted teams are interested.

The Spaniard is continuing with Moore as a part of his squad, but couldn’t commit to a long-term future for the striker.

“Kieffer is our player,” said Selles. “I don’t deal with those situations or proposals or gossips, and I don’t think he was ready for us today, so I decided to play with some other players we want to see like Tom Cannon, who was exceptional today in the press and the way that we do it.

“There is nothing from my side on that comment; he was still here and doing his job and working hard for the team. He’s part of us, and if the future something happens, let’s see.

“We have a lot of good players. So the interest in them is always there and I can understand that. Kieffer is a player that has been very experienced in this league, got some promotions and is a big name. Obviously, teams are interested in him, but the point where we have a proposal becomes a far away proposal.

“I don’t control that, so for me it’s a player that, for now, is a member of my team and I will decide if I want to play him depending on his performances,” he added.

Wrexham may shake up target man options

Parkinson has regularly used a target man during his time in charge of Wrexham, with Ollie Palmer often the big man deployed up top.

Palmer has, sadly, slipped down the Wrexham pecking order and could leave the club before the summer transfer deadline.

Wrexham also snapped up Modou Faal last summer, but he may need a loan move in order to continue his development.

The Gambian has potential, but he struggled for first-team chances last season, and Wrexham are now stepping up a level, so it’s difficult to see his fortunes improving as things stand.

Michael Smith has joined Preston North End despite interest from Wrexham, and that may leave Moore as Parkinson’s top target man on the radar.

Signing Moore would surely push Palmer closer to the exit door, but Parkinson may feel that he needs a proven Championship target man – and Moore certainly fits that bill.
