Former Birmingham City talent viewed as Wrexham’s ‘prime’ transfer target as talks continue

Wrexham are in the market for another midfield signing, and Phil Parkinson’s number one target appears to be emerging.

Wrexham snapped up Callum Doyle last week, luring the defender to the STōK Cae Ras from Manchester City.

Doyle represented another major investment for Wrexham, arriving in a deal believed to be worth around £7.5million to £8million, inclusive of potential add-ons.

Wrexham have now made 10 summer signings, and Parkinson still wants more new faces before next week’s deadline.

Reports suggest that Wrexham want to sign a new midfielder, with three names at the top of Parkinson’s wish list.

West Ham United’s Andy Irving, Southampton’s Will Smallbone and Rennes talent Jordan James are all thought to be wanted by Wrexham.

Jordan James emerging as Wrexham’s top target

Reports around West Ham suggest that Irving’s wage demands could scupper a move to Wrexham, though he may not even be the top target anyway.

Sky Sports claim that Welsh International James is the ‘prime target’ for Wrexham as Parkinson chases a central midfielder.

It’s stated that Wrexham are in talks over a deal for James and are hoping to reach an agreement with Rennes quickly.

Reports from France last week suggested that Wrexham had started negotiations to sign James, with a £4.3million deal being discussed.

James was then left out of the Rennes squad to face Lorient on Sunday, having been on the bench against Marseille a week earlier.

That certainly pointed towards a potential transfer, and Wrexham are now hoping to win the race for James’ signature.

James was a top young talent at Birmingham City, and his impressive displays resulted in a move to Rennes last summer.

Rennes have undergone changes this summer, with transfer chief Ricky Massara let go following a difficult season.

Massara signed James, but with the Italian now at Roma, Rennes could cash in on James and allow him to join Wrexham.

Jordan James can become Wrexham’s latest Wales international

Welsh recruitment has been a key theme throughout Wrexham’s summer business.

Wales international stopper Danny Ward rejoined Wrexham on a free transfer earlier this summer and has become Parkinson’s first-choice stopper.

Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead have also arrived, with the two Welsh attackers reuniting at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham continue to chase Welsh players, and James could be the next to arrive.

The 21-year-old was born in Hereford, but his father, who turned out for Hereford United and Burton Albion in his playing days, hails from Abergavenny.

James plays for Wales on the international stage, despite earning two caps with the England Under-20s in 2022.

James has now played 20 times for Wales and could add to that tally as a Wrexham player – if Parkinson and co can force this deal over the line.
