Wrexham are in the market for a new forward in January and Wayne Rooney’s departure from Plymouth Argyle may hand Phil Parkinson a boost.

The January transfer window is here and Wrexham are likely to make moves.

Phil Parkinson was backed with eight summer signings and Wrexham have even added four free agent signings since the summer deadline.

The quest for improvement never ends though and Shaun Harvey has confirmed that Wrexham can spend in January.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds look ready to spend on new signings and are prepared to back Parkinson again.

Wrexham sit third in the League One table and a couple of major additions in January could land a third promotion in a row.

Wrexham handed potential Joe Gelhardt boost

Parkinson will want to strengthen in multiple areas and attacking additions may be top of the priority list.

Reports suggest that Wrexham are ready to spend on a new striker in an attempt to reach the Championship.

Patrick Bamford has been linked with Wrexham but Leeds United teammate Joe Gelhardt is also on the radar.

Gelhardt has played just nine minutes of Championship football this season, across just two substitute appearances.

The 22-year-old needs to leave Leeds this month and Wrexham have at least eyed him up.

Gelhardt is attracting plenty of interest though and Plymouth Argyle were thought to be keen on the forward.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon now claims that Argyle’s decision to axe Wayne Rooney could throw a spanner in the works.

It’s suggested that a loan deal with Plymouth was imminent before Rooney was sacked – and the move is now in doubt.

That could allow Wrexham to swoop in and take Gelhardt on loan, leaving funds available to land permanent signings in other areas.

Wrexham are eyeing Argyle’s Ryan Hardie but news of Gelhardt’s deal being in doubt may just see him become the focus after Rooney’s exit.

More Gelhardt competition emerges

Whilst one competitor for Gelhardt could be fading away, other Championship clubs are offering interest too.

Reporter Darren Witcoop claims that ‘several’ Championship clubs have registered an interest in Gelhardt.

Argyle are mentioned again but it’s stated that Gelhardt is now weighing up his future amid interest from a number of clubs.

Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers and Derby County are mentioned with Gelhardt attracting plenty of Championship interest.

Wrexham may well prefer a permanent signing over a loan like Gelhardt, but his situation has certainly become more intriguing now this potential move to Plymouth has been thrown into doubt.
