The future of one Phil Parkinson transfer target he’s been trying to bring to Wrexham for a while has become clear this week.

Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham, they have generally been able to land the majority of their targets.

Shaun Harvey commented on the players Wrexham have failed to sign recently, suggesting that there are not too many targets they don’t land.

John McAtee joining Bolton Wanderers instead of the Welsh side was used as an example by Harvey, but there is another player Phil Parkinson has been trying to land for a while now.

Long-time Wrexham target Michael Smith has future decision made

Wrexham held talks to sign Michael Smith during the 2024 summer transfer window, but were unable to land the Championship striker.

With the club in the market for new numbers nines in January as well, meanwhile, interest in the Sheffield Wednesday ace once again returned.

Wrexham’s transfer interest in Smith over the winter was documented, with it reported that Harvey went to Yorkshire to watch Wednesday’s clash versus Bristol City on January 22.

However, yet again, Wrexham were unable to strike a deal for the attacker.

There was some hope of a Smith transfer this summer as the forward’s contract with the Owls was due to expire next month.

However, Wednesday have now confirmed this week that they have taken up an option in the player’s contract.

They wrote: “Barry Bannan, Akin Famewo and Callum Paterson have been offered new contracts, while Wednesday have exercised options to retain Anthony Musaba, Michael Smith and Josh Windass.”

Wrexham striker targets

While a move for Smith now looks much less likely, there are a number of other centre-forwards the club have looked at.

Callum Robinson is wanted by Wrexham and Cardiff City’s chairman has spoken about transfers this week in a boost to the Dragons.

Patrick Bamford is linked to the Welsh side once more as well, while Ryan Hardie rumours emerged again after he was also looked at in January.
