Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney biggest Wrexham transfer mistake of the summer is so clear

Wrexham had a productive summer transfer window but Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made one big mistake.

The Wrexham owners allowed Phil Parkinson to sign nine new players in the most recent transfer window.

The Red Dragons are aiming to secure a place in the Championship for the first time in their history and improved their squad a great deal in the 2024 summer window.

Wrexham are unbeaten at home in 2024/25, in no small part due to their superb defensive record.

A key reason for that record is goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who has been backed to go to the top after he returned to the Racecourse Ground on a permanent basis over the summer.

Elsewhere, after completing a free transfer from League One rivals Charlton Athletic, midfielder George Dobson has been likened to Bobby Moore.

But while it was a largely positive summer for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, a couple of their transfer calls could prove to be questionable.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made one Wrexham transfer mistake over the summer

Wrexham broke their transfer record to sign Ollie Rathbone from Rotherham United in early August, paying out £500,000.

McElhenney and Reynolds are still waiting to see if the Rathbone transfer will pay off after the midfielder has struggled to cement himself as a regular starter under Parkinson.

But that deal cannot really be classed as a mistake just yet. Instead, the Hollywood duo’s decision not to sign a more experienced centre-forward could come back to cost them in their hunt for League One promotion.

Wrexham currently have five strikers competing for two starting places but while that is enough depth, the quality in that department is somewhat lacking.

Wrexham will regret not signing another striker this summer

Parkinson should be concerned about Wrexham’s attacking threat right now with several of his centre-forwards failing to impress.

Wrexham paid West Bromwich Albion £590,000 for Modou Faal in late August, breaking their transfer record for a second time in the space of a few weeks.

However, Faal is still yet to see any action in the league and looks to be a signing for the future, rather than this season.

This leaves Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher as their main forward options this term.

However, Parkinson has been told Fletcher is not good enough to start anymore after the 37-year-old has struggled in the early stages of 2024/25.

Palmer, meanwhile, has never been the most prolific goalscorer for Wrexham and has just two goals in 10 this season.

Mullin has also been far from his best with a lot of pressure currently on Marriott to perform.

While the club have largely gotten by with several of their strikers struggling so far this campaign, the decision by Reynolds and McElhenney not to bring in an established goalscorer over the summer will surely come back to bite them as the 2024/25 season goes on.
