Sam Smith snubbing European interest to join Wrexham
Wrexham have wanted to sign a new striker this month and we have seen so many forwards linked with moves to the STōK Cae Ras.
A deal for Michael Smith was described as unlikely despite Wrexham making an approach for the Sheffield Wednesday striker.
Parkinson appears to have moved on and Wrexham are now closing in on Sam Smith.
Reports earlier on Thursday suggested that Wrexham will imminently lure Smith away from Reading in a ‘multi-million pound’ deal.
Wrexham will shatter the club’s transfer record on Smith and more details about his move are now emerging.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crooks claims that Smith had interest from other EFL clubs and even teams in Europe.
Smith has decided on a move to Wrexham, snubbing any prospect of a move to Europe in favour of joining the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds project.
It’s added that Parkinson wants Smith on board quickly and will have a ‘big role to play’ in Wrexham’s push for promotion.
This seems to be a major coup for Wrexham but Parkinson will be in a race against time to get him on board before the trip to Crawley Town this weekend.
Sam Smith once won promotion alongside Ben Tozer
Smith’s move to Wrexham will hopefully spark a change in form and a real push towards promotion to the Championship.
The striker has been prolific for Reading, hitting 27 goals in 63 games since re-joining Reading in 2023.
Smith has a promotion on his CV too having gone up from League Two with Cheltenham Town back in 2021.
Cheltenham finished top of the League Two table and Smith clinched promotion alongside a couple of familiar faces to Wrexham fans.
Current Wrexham defender Will Boyle and fan favourite Ben Tozer were both part of that Cheltenham side alongside Smith.
If Parkinson wanted a verdict about Smith as a player and as a person, Boyle and Tozer would have surely been willing to give a review – and Smith will now become the latest ambitious addition for Parkinson as he chases another promotion.
