Wrexham have been tracking Swansea City defender Harry Darling but look set to miss out on a move for the centre-back.

We have now passed the midway point of June and Wrexham fans are still waiting for a first summer arrival.

Several other Championship clubs are yet to bring in new signings, with the transfer window still in its early stages.

There is no reason to panic; Phil Parkinson tends to be patient in the transfer market and will have plenty of Wrexham targets in mind.

Central defenders are on the radar as Will Boyle nears a move to Gillingham, but one target appears to have slipped away.

Wrexham target Harry Darling confirms Swansea City exit

Wrexham boasted a strong defence in League One, but Parkinson wants to make a major strength even stronger.

Aaron Cresswell and Craig Dawson are on Wrexham’s radar, while Ben Davies is still a target for Parkinson despite Tottenham Hotspur extending his contract.

Reports in May suggested Wrexham were interested in signing Harry Darling from Swansea City.

Cresswell, Dawson and Davies are all in their 30s, but Darling is just 25 and has proven himself at Championship level.

Out of contract at Swansea this summer, Darling represented an exciting target for Wrexham given that he still has untapped potential for the future.

Rangers joined the race for Darling and posed a major threat to Wrexham’s hopes of a deal, and all clubs in the race for his signature received an update on Monday evening.

Darling took to social media to confirm that he is leaving Swansea and taking the next step in his career.

Darling admitted that his exit comes with a ‘heavy heart’, but it’s time to move on with his contract expiring later this month.

Norwich City close in on Darling

That announcement may have given Wrexham some hope of a deal, but it was pretty short-lived.

PinkUn report that Norwich City are now confident of securing a deal for Darling.

New Canaries boss Liam Manning admitted his interest in Darling, having previously worked together at Milton Keynes Dons.

It’s now suggested that Norwich are finalising a deal for Darling, though there is still work to be done before the deal is rubber-stamped.

Wrexham were always going to face intense competition for Darling’s signature; it’s not often a top 25-year-old Championship defender becomes available on a free transfer.

Swansea director of football Richard Montague branded Darling ‘exceptional’ when speaking to BBC Sport, and it was no surprise to see a host of clubs show an interest.

Norwich appear to have won the race, leaving Wrexham to move on to other targets and ultimately forget about signing Darling.
