Dom Hyam’s excuses after Stoke City defeat will leave Wrexham fans even more frustrated

Wrexham returned from the international break with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Stoke City, and fans will not be satisfied with Dom Hyam’s post-match explanation of the result.

Prior to the recent break, Wrexham had racked up three straight 1-1 draws. While not losing games, it was clear the Red Dragons were lacking the clinical edge to get over the line and pick up three points.

That was the theme once more on Saturday afternoon at the Bet365 Stadium, with Kieffer Moore misfiring and Phil Parkinson’s side unable to get back into the game after Sorba Thomas gave the Potters the lead in the first half.

The defeat leaves Wrexham perilously close to the Championship relegation zone, and fans are starting to panic about what the future holds this season.

What Dom Hyam said after Wrexham defeat to Stoke City

With a five-game unbeaten run coming to an end for Wrexham and a lacklustre performance all round, questions are being asked about the Red Dragons.

However, there was very little in the way of actual answers to be found in Dom Hyam’s post-match interview.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel after the game, the defender said: “We’re talking about fine margins in the dressing room. It wasn’t through a lack of trying, but it just wasn’t our day today. It was just a bit frustrating that we limited them to not much at all. On the other hand, I don’t think we created enough as well.

“It’s luck sometimes. We knew that they like to cross balls and put a few balls into the box which we dealt with quite a lot in the first half but just one we weren’t set and didn’t deal with. But yeah, that’s the Championship.

“It won’t be remembered this game… we just need to dust ourselves down and not get too down about it.”

The players might want to forget that result and poor performance in a hurry, but it’s not that simple, and we know the fans will not be letting this go anytime soon. To put a defeat down to pure bad luck is a weak excuse, and no one will be happy to hear that it’s merely the nature of the division Wrexham are in.

So, what will Wrexham do going forward, particularly against Oxford United in the next fixture? Hyam doesn’t have much to offer on that front, either.

He added: “It’s hard to pinpoint something now, but you know if the game’s not got much in it and chances are few and far between, I think what’s important is you don’t lose the game and you get something out of it.”

Let’s hope Phil Parkinson has more of an idea of what Wrexham need to do differently!

Wrexham fans are losing patience with Phil Parkinson approach

Speaking of the Wrexham manager, it’s safe to say this latest dismal showing has left fans with less and less confidence in Parkinson’s ability to steer the club through this Championship campaign.

On social media, you can clearly see fans are doubting Parkinson and his tactics. It seems to be a common occurrence now that supporters are demanding an alternative to ‘Parkyball’ and those demands are now sounding more and more like a call for the manager to be replaced.

Based on what Parkinson told his players after the Stoke defeat, those tactics are not going to change anytime soon. He spoke of “the process” and “the way we’re going to keep playing,” but how much longer will the fans trust that process?

One would have to think that a negative result against Oxford in midweek would leave Parkinson in a very difficult position indeed.
