Wrexham’s first team are preparing to face Birmingham City but there was also a Central League game against Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

Wrexham are still reeling after losing 2-1 at Shrewsbury Town on Thursday night.

Losing a derby always hurts, but Wrexham never really turned upon a frustrating defeat.

Phil Parkinson now has a chance to hit back against Birmingham City on Thursday night as another celebrity clash looms.

There will be plenty of hype around Tom Brady, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for this game but Parkinson will just want the three points.

Parkinson will have been paying close attention to his reserves on Tuesday afternoon as they suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers in the Central League.

Here are three talking points as Wrexham suffered another Central League defeat…

Yassine Toure on the bench

Agent Benjamin Heath posted a photo of the lineups from Lostock and Wrexham fans may have noticed Yassine Toure’s name on the bench.

Toure began training with Wrexham in November having been released by Leicester City at the end of last season.

The winger was hoping to win a deal at Wrexham and carries weight to his name; he is the son of former Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City ace Kolo Toure.

News on Toure has been quiet since then but his presence on the bench suggests that he is here to stay.

It’s also worth pointing out that Toure’s Instagram profile features Wrexham in the bio, another hint that he has in fact signed on a permanent basis.

In-demand youngster features

That team sheet also showed the name of Tom Kelly in the Wrexham XI.

Reports in December highlighted that a number of Championship clubs have been eyeing up Kelly for their academy setups.

Defender Kelly is only 17 but there will be high hopes for him to become a first-team regular down the line.

Wrexham missed out on local talents such as Tom Lawrence, Harry Wilson and Neco Williams in years gone by.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are driving Wrexham forward through the leagues but academy development must be a focus too.

Kelly is one talent Wrexham want to maximise moving forward and giving him this Central League exposure should aid his development.

Fringe trio given chance to impress

The Wrexham lineup features two senior players and one talent who could have a first-team future at the STōK Cae Ras.

James Jones captained the side whilst Anthony Forde started in the 6-1 thrashing.

Jones is on his way back from another injury blow and needs to take every chance that comes his way in order to impress Parkinson.

Wrexham used the Central League to aid George Evans in his return from injury and did the same for Jones on Tuesday.

Jones was supposed to return against Port Vale but with that EFL Trophy clash postponed, this was his comeback having picked up an injury against Crewe Alexandra in December.

Forde wasn’t even registered for League One action in the first half of the season and may be on his way out with his contract expiring this summer.

We did see the Irishman on the bench against Peterborough United though, so a return to action can’t be completely ruled out.

Josh Adam was also involved as he attempts to catch Parkinson’s eye.

Adam joined Wrexham on a free transfer in September having been let go by Manchester City.

The Scottish midfielder is yet to feature in League One though and is only on a one-year contract with the option of a second year.

Adam will hope to do enough to earn that extra year, but it’s difficult to take too many positives from a 6-1 thumping.
