Andy Morrell thinks ‘terrific’ player is already in talks to sign a new contract at Wrexham

Wrexham have a couple of high-profile contract situations to deal with in the 2024/25 season.

In their quest to win promotion from the National League for the first time in 15 years, Wrexham offered quite a lot of their current players short-term contracts, most of which were for three years but some shorter.

After winning back-to-back promotions and now plying their trade in League One, a lot of those deals were due to expire this year or in 2025.

Wrexham released several players during the 2024 summer transfer window and have some tough decisions to make on another group of players who are now in the final 12 months of their deals at the Racecourse Ground.

One contract situation has been sorted this month after Wrexham confirmed Ollie Palmer signed a new deal that will keep him in Wales until 2026.

However, Jack Marriott, James Jones, Jacob Mendy, Anthony Forde, Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard are all in the final 12 months of their contracts.

Wrexham legend gives Ryan Barnett contract verdict

Another player whose future in Wales will need to be addressed soon is right-back Ryan Barnett.

Wrexham triggered a Barnett contract extension that will keep him with Phil Parkinson’s side until 2026.

But that is still a pretty short time for a player of his quality and fans are no doubt worried he could be sold in the summer.

However, as per Wales Online, club legend Andy Morrell thinks that Wrexham and Barnett are already in talks over a new contract.

He said: “I certainly think that they should be talking to him and it would be foolish of the club not to.

“With the clubs that have been sniffing around him, how well he’s playing, and how important he is to Wrexham, I’d be very surprised if there weren’t already talks going on with his agent to get him a better deal. It’s just good common sense.

“I’d be surprised if it’s only two clubs that are interested and they’re probably just the ones that have shown their hand.

“Everything that he does is going well and he’s producing and creating for the team.

“If he carries on the way he is going, it won’t just be Championship clubs that will be looking at him. It will be lower end Premier League clubs as well.”

Ryan Barnett transfer interest

Steve Parkin called Barnett ‘terrific’ after his performance against Northampton Town prior to the October international break.

And the Englishman has been Wrexham’s standout performer for much of the 2024/25 campaign so far.

This has inevitably led to the wing-back garnering attention from other clubs, with Stoke City and Preston North End both interested in Barnett.

Rob McElhenney responded to transfer interest in Barnett recently and the American will no doubt be keen to see the player remain with Wrexham beyond 2026.
