Wrexham allowed Billy Waters to leave the club this month and he has now made his first start for Oldham Athletic.

The January transfer window was always going to bring changes for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson does not want Wrexham to stand still and every window represents an opportunity to freshen up the squad.

Wrexham have signed Ryan Longman in the last few days, adding the Hull City utility man in a £500,000 deal.

Departures have also been confirmed with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson on fire at Burton Albion after leaving Wrexham.

Sam Dalby is staying at Dundee United and Billy Waters has signed for Oldham Athletic after his loan spell at Halifax Town was cut short.

Billy Waters makes first Oldham Athletic start

Waters rejoined Halifax Town on transfer deadline day back in August after a frustrating time at Wrexham.

The forward lined from Barrow in 2023 but managed just eight appearances for the club in all competitions.

After a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, Wrexham allowed Waters to return to Halifax and find some goalscoring form in the National League.

Waters hit five goals in 18 games before heading back to Wrexham, with his comeback only to finalise the formalities of his contract being ripped up.

Oldham Athletic were happy to sign Waters on a permanent basis, finally bringing his Wrexham run to an end.

Saturday saw Waters make his first start for the Latics as he featured in a 1-1 draw at Gateshead.

Waters managed 73 minutes but couldn’t find the net and picked up a yellow card in the first half.

It’s early days for Waters at Oldham and we have no doubt that he will find the net in the National League once he has settled in.

Waters teams up with ex-Wrexham striker

Waters’ first start offered up a quirk as his strike partner was another former Wrexham striker.

Mike Fondop joined Waters in attack and he found the net in the first half with yet another goal.

Fondop has now scored 11 times for Oldham this season and will be looking to wreak havoc alongside Waters.

Fondop joined Wrexham from Guiseley back in 2018 having been around a number of non-league clubs.

The Cameroonian forward scored six times in 26 games for Wrexham but left the club by mutual consent after just over a year at the club.

Initially looking like a cult hero, Fondop’s time at Wrexham didn’t quite go to plan.

Now 31, Fondop appears to have found a home at Oldham – and Waters will be looking for the same with his move to Boundary Park.

Oldham are still in the National League play-off mix and we may yet to see Fondop and Waters firing the Latics to promotion this season.

We have seen Sam Dalby and Louis Moult team up at Dundee United and we will now see Fondop and Waters together in another all-ex-Wrexham strike pairing.
