Championship CEO appears to make comparison to Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore after signing free agent

Wrexham were in the market for a new target man over the summer, and there are few better at this level than Kieffer Moore.

We know that Phil Parkinson loves a big, physical centre forward as the focal point of his attack.

Ollie Palmer served as that player during Wrexham’s rise, providing the perfect foil for Paul Mullin in the final third.

Palmer has now joined Swindon Town after falling down Wrexham’s pecking order in 2025, with Parkinson landing a new target man over the summer.

Wrexham snapped up Kieffer Moore from Sheffield United, paying around £2million to secure the Welsh international.

The early signs look positive, with Moore already on his way to becoming a Wrexham cult hero.

Preston North End chief hints towards Kieffer Moore’s Wrexham move

Moore may not have really clicked in his one season with Sheffield United, but he is a proven target man at Championship level.

Wrexham are now reaping the rewards, though Moore was not the only target man on Parkinson’s radar.

Michael Smith was another Wrexham target, with Parkinson still keen over the summer after missing out in 2024 and in January 2025.

Smith left Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer this summer and completed a move to Preston North End.

The veteran forward has yet to score for PNE, but his move has been praised by North End chief executive Peter Ridsdale.

Speaking to the Lancashire Evening Post, Ridsdale compared Smith’s move to that of another tall, 33-year-old striker who joined a Championship rival for £2million.

That would certainly point towards Moore being the comparison, with Ridsdale stating that the deal to sign Smith was a ‘smart move’, while pointing to the fee and wages of the other mystery striker – which appears to be Moore.

“Well, we brought in Michael Smith, who I liken his age, experience and skills to a player that’s gone to one of our competitors,” said Ridsdale.

“Michael came in because of Sheffield Wednesday’s problems on a deal that really works for us. Somebody very similar, at the same age, went to one of our competitors for a £2m transfer fee and 2.5x wages. So, I think that was a smart move for us,” he added.

Kieffer Moore proving to be worth the money for Wrexham

Smith was a smart signing for PNE, offering Championship know-how on a free transfer, while providing a focal point for the dangerous Milutin Osmajic to feed off.

The former Wednesday ace has yet to find the net, though, and Wrexham will certainly feel that Moore is providing value for money.

Moore scored twice against Sheffield Wednesday, buried the winner against Preston North End and then opened the scoring against Millwall last weekend.

As if four goals in three games for Wrexham weren’t enough, Moore then scored the winner for Wales against Kazakhstan on Thursday.

PNE may not be in a position to commit £2million and significant wages to signing Moore, but Wrexham will be very happy with the return on investment so far.
