George Thomason has left Bolton Wanderers to join Wrexham on a permanent transfer, signing a contract lasting until 2028.

Wrexham have taken the summer signings tally up to four with the signing of George Thomason. On Monday, Wrexham announced the signing of Thomason who captained Bolton Wanderers last season, playing 38 times in League One and scoring four.

He arrives after the signing of Liberato Cacace. The New Zealand international signed for Wrexham whilst they were actually in New Zealand, with Wrexham paying a club record transfer of £4million for Cacace, who joins from Empoli in Italy.

Next up, Phil Parkinson looks as though he could sign Josh Windass who is rumoured to be set for a medical with Wrexham in the coming days.

It’s all shaping up nicely after a fairly subdued start to the summer transfer window, but what to expect from Wrexham in the Championship next season remains to be seen.

George Thomason looks ahead to the Championship after signing for Wrexham

Speaking in his first interview as a Wrexham player, Thomason was asked what we can expect from both his and his new teammates in the Championship next season, as the Dragons gear up to play in the second tier of English football for the first time in more than 40 years.

Thomason said: “For me it’s also the first time I’m playing in the Championship. So hopefully we’re going to come in here and be super competitive. Look, there’s a culture here of togetherness and team spirit, but also these boys know how to win football matches. So, I’m very confident that that’s going to be something that we’re going to progress on even more this season.

“We’re going to have a real good go at it. We’re going to attack it. And for me personally, I want to play as many games as I possibly can and help contribute to the team.”

What others are saying about Wrexham in the Championship

Everyone in the side will have their own ambitions for the Championship next season. As a whole, few know what to expect from Wrexham, but as ever people remain optimistic about what they can do in the second tier.

Speaking earlier in the summer, former player Lee Trundle predicted Wrexham’s fortunes in the Championship next season, and having watched the Championship for a long time, he says that the Dragons can be as competitive as anyone.

Similarly, midfielder Ollie Rathbone, who looks set to miss the start of next season through injury picked up in Australia, has said Wrexham can cause some upsets in the Championship next season.

Rathbone said when speaking about Wrexham’s chances next season: “I feel we can have a really strong season and hopefully cause a few surprises. The Championship is a massive step-up in terms of the quality on the pitch, the size of the stadiums and the atmosphere.”

Having returned from Australia and New Zealand, Wrexham will play Dutch side FC Groningen in a friendly on August 2nd, with another friendly likely to be confirmed for before that date too.
