Humphrey Ker drops major hint on how much money Wrexham will actually spend this summer

Rival fans will often say that Wrexham have simply bought their way to the Championship. But that’s just not the case.

Wrexham are the envy of many teams in the English Football League. Since Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney arrived at the club in late 2021, they’ve overseen three straight promotions, with Wrexham becoming a globally-supported team in the process.

Last season, manager Phil Parkinson secured a 2nd place finish in League One. It’s a historic promotion for the club and there’s now a new season of Welcome to Wrexham to further stamp the club into the global domain.

And whilst Wrexham have spent their share of money, they’ve not overspent. Last season even, Birmingham City paid £15million to sign Jay Stansfield, whilst Wrexham broke their club record transfer to sign Sam Smith for £2million in January.

Humphrey Ker suggests Wrexham won’t break the bank this summer

The summer transfer window opens on June 1st and already it seems like Parkinson has a growing list of players he wants to sign this summer. And there’s some exciting rumours too; one being that Wrexham have offered Tom Cairney a £50,000-a-week contract to sign as a free agent this summer.

It could suggest that Wrexham are set to spend big this summer. But speaking on The Chris Moyles Show, Wrexham’s community director Humphrey Ker has stated that Wrexham have never spent beyond their means, suggesting that the club’s spending will be managed once again this summer.

He explained: “In the National League we spent way more than anyone else. League Two we spent a fair bit more than everyone else. League One we basically were spending about the same or less than a number of others. I mean Birmingham spent way way more than we did, and I think Huddersfield spent about the same as various other teams.

“But all our money comes from sponsorship. So we get crazy sponsorship because of the documentary, because of Rob and Ryan. So everyone’s like ‘They’re going to run into PSR problems and financial fair play is going to catch up and they’re going to get bored and blah blah blah’. We actually have only been spending what we’ve been earning so far.”

How much money Wrexham could have to spend this summer revealed

There’s all sorts of speculation and debate about just how much money Wrexham could spend in the transfer market this summer. But speaking to Wrexham Insider earlier in the year, football finance expert Adam Williams gave the clearest answer yet.

He explained that with promotion to the Championship comes a new set of financial rules and regulations. But judging by their current accounts, the Dragons could have a staggering £38million worth of headroom, for transfers and wages and so on, minus whatever their losses from the 2024/25 were.

It’s a huge amount of money. But like Ker says, Wrexham won’t spend beyond their means. Why would they? They have an incredible thing going right now, and it’s sustainable too which is rare for a rise of this calibre.

Nonetheless, we can expect to see some exciting new players arrive at the Racecourse this summer.
