Wrexham have already said goodbye to some important figures in the club’s recent success.

Steven Fletcher confirmed his Wrexham departure following the expiration of his contract, whilst Mark Howard was also released by the Red Dragons.

Jordan Davies thanked the Wrexham owners upon announcing his departure from the club and the squad re-build for the Championship is well underway.

Phil Parkinson warned of departures this summer and another star linked with a move away from the club is striker Ollie Palmer.

Rob McElhenney compared Ollie Palmer to ‘Braveheart’ character

Waynne Phillips has backed Palmer’s exit this summer but speaking on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ season 1, episode 11, the striker’s importance to the club was highlighted by his description from Rob McElhenney.

Palmer was signed in January 2022, amid a turbulent period at the club for Parkinson where results were not as expected and a new centre forward was needed by the manager.

McElhenney stated: “We decided to stick with Phil not because of the wins and losses but also because of the team culture he built,

“We also decided to go ahead and buy that striker he was asking for. Remember in Braveheart when they introduced that character about halfway through and it completely changed the trajectory of the movie, yeah that’s the guy I’m talking about, the Irish guy,

“Well we have our own version of that and his name… Ollie Palmer.”

Ollie Palmer’s special relationship with Wrexham owners

Palmer came into the club at a time when they were in desperate need of his ability and he proved to be the difference in getting the club out of the national league.

Ryan Reynolds was in New York with Palmer recently and the striker’s relationship with the Wrexham owners has been another example of the ‘team’ culture around the club.

Palmer praised Reynolds and McElhenney for their care and interest in the team but all parties will know that football requires ruthless decisions.

His expected departure this summer will hurt a lot of fans as well as the owners but it may prove the best decision for everyone involved in the long run.
