Wrexham have now held talks about signing a Premier League player ahead of the summer transfer window opening in two weeks time.
The summer transfer window opens on June 1st after the EFL confirmed the official dates for the upcoming summer window, which promises to be a big one for Wrexham.
Wrexham have been promoted to the Championship and already there’s a growing list of players linked with a move to the Racecourse, with some exciting potential signings among them.
Phil Parkinson wants to sign experienced Championship players this summer. He looks set to follow the same transfer method that’s landed his side three-straight promotions, and now there’s a new and very experienced name on his radar.

Wrexham make approach to sign Tom Cairney at Fulham
An emerging report from The Telegraph has revealed that Wrexham ‘have made an approach’ to sign Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney. The same report adds that talks over a deal are ‘at the early stages’ for Cairney, who by all accounts is out of contract this summer.
But The Telegraph add that Wrexham signing Cairney would likely break the club’s transfer record: the £2million signing of Sam Smith in the last January transfer window from Reading, suggesting that Cairney has penned an extension with the club.
Cairney, who has played twice for Scotland, has more than 350 appearances to his name with Fulham, winning promotion from the Championship on three occasions with the London club too.

Tom Cairney’s stats at Championship level as Wrexham take aim
Cairney is about as experienced as they’d come for Wrexham. He’s decorated in both the Championship and Premier League but as Fulham have established themselves in the top flight, signing bigger and better, Cairney has fallen down the pecking order.
In 2024/25 so far he’s featured 23 times in the Premier League, scoring once and only starting two games. Now he looks set for a summer exit but having remained injury free for the last few seasons, there’s nothing to suggest that the 34-year-old couldn’t arrived at Wrexham and become a top player.
| Stat (Champ.) | Tom Cairney career so far |
| Games | 318 |
| Goals | 45 |
| Assists | 51 |
His experience at Championship level alone would be a massive addition for Parkinson. Cairney is also a midfielder who can operate a bit deeper, further forward, or in a more box-to-box role, so there’s a lot to like about this potential signing.
