Former Wrexham star can prove Phil Parkinson wrong after unexpectedly signing for rivals

Wrexham have seen one of their former players join a Championship rivals, in a rather unexpected move following his release in North Wales.

At the end of last season, Wrexham released eight first-team players, eventually going on to sign 13 new names during the summer transfer window.

Some tough decisions had to be made with Wrexham fans upset by the decision to release Steven Fletcher in particular. Since then, Fletcher has announced his retirement from football.

But Phil Parkinson now has a much better squad at his disposal after Wrexham spent £33million on new signings in the summer, with the club breaking their transfer record on multiple occasions.

Meanwhile, those who moved on have all taken different paths, with many heading down to the lower leagues of English football, whilst Liam Hall has now signed for one of Wrexham’s Championship rivals.

Sheffield United confirm Liam Hall signing after Wrexham release

Among the names let go by Wrexham at the end of last season was Liam Hall. The young goalkeeper signed for Wrexham from Bradford Park Avenue in 2023 but left without ever making a first-team appearance for the Dragons.

Now though, after an unsuccessful trial with Rotherham United, Hall has joined Sheffield United, signing a pro contract until the end of the 2025/26 season with an option to extend his stay by another year.

Hall’s move to Bramall Lane comes amid a lot of ongoing uncertainty within Wrexham’s own goalkeeping department, and the decision to let Hall go so soon might well come back to haunt Parkinson and co.

Wrexham now set to sign another young goalkeeper

Arthur Okonkwo is Wrexham’s no.1 right now, after injury has seen previous no.1 Danny Ward sidelined for a number of months.

But Okonkwo has put in some mixed performances so far. As was the case last season, the former Arsenal man seems to lack consistency and he’s arguably been at fault for a couple of goals since coming into the XI earlier in the season.

Callum Burton is now the no.2 and there’s also youngster Reuben Egan in the ranks. But Wrexham are now set to sign Sam Hocking after a successful trial period: the young Australian goalkeeper holds a British passport and is expected to arrive in North Wales soon.

Sheffield United signing Hall clearly shows that the Blades see something in him that Wrexham didn’t, and if he goes on to prevail in South Yorkshire then Wrexham might look foolish, especially given the lack of quality in their own goalkeeping department right now.

For Hall, it’s a brilliant chance to prove any of his Wrexham doubters wrong.
