Wrexham’s rise shows no sign of ending with the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds project continuing to move forward.
It’s not every day that you see two Hollywood stars investing in a non-league football club.
That is exactly what happened to Wrexham though with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds deciding to purchase the club in 2021.
McElhenney and Reynolds paid £2million for Wrexham and have proven over the years that this is no publicity stunt.
Wrexham have won back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson and are now challenging at the top end of League One.
A third promotion in a row would be a remarkable achievement for Wrexham and it’s a real possibility thanks to Parkinson.
Paul Mullin on Wrexham embarrassment
The first major step in the Wrexham journey under McElhenney and Reynolds was the signing of striker Paul Mullin.
Mullin decided to leave Cambridge United in the summer of 2021 despite firing them to promotion into League One.
McElhenney tempted Mullin to Wrexham, luring him to the STōK Cae Ras despite him having to drop down two divisions.
Mullin has become a hero at Wrexham ever since that move, racking up 108 goals in 162 games across all competitions.
This season has been a slow one for Mullin, scoring just once in League One so far this term.
Mullin is still a fan favourite though and has now spoken about his initial embarrassment at Wrexham.
Speaking to The Mirror, Mullin admitted that he found the hype around the Hollywood ownership and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ ‘quite dumb’ at first.
Mullin also found his new-found fame ‘a bit strange’ as he became one of the stars of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
Mullin changed his mind over the years though and eventually felt pride about his role in this rise and his importance to this Hollywood project.
“It’s been a whirlwind – at first it seemed quite dumb for people to focus on things like that and I used to feel embarrassed by it,” said Mullin.
“I came here to play football and for people who don’t support Wrexham to recognise you from the documentary felt a bit strange.
“But luckily I did well enough on the pitch for the embarrassment to turn into pride and the whole story has been phenomenal. I don’t think you could have written it any better if you were writing a film screenplay,” he added.
Mullin may soon face new competition at Wrexham
Mullin has been the star player of Wrexham’s rise but this season has been a little unusual for him.
If Mullin doesn’t score against Bristol Rovers this weekend, he will head into Christmas with just one league goal to his name.
Mullin’s start to last season was a little slow by his own incredible standards, but he had still managed seven league goals by Christmas.
This season just hasn’t really kicked off for Mullin and we can only hope that he hits a stunning run of form in the second half of the season, just he did last term.
Wrexham want to sign another striker in January though and with Mullin currently stuck on the bench, he could face new competition for a striking role.
We will back Mullin to find his feet and find the net, but Wrexham are also realistic and know that the more goalscorers who can make an impact in the final third, the better.
