Wrexham have been on quite the journey under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but one player has stood out as the hero of this rise.
Wrexham turn 160 years old today.
The club has been through so many ups and downs in that time but the last few years have been one of the most remarkable chapters in this long story.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds completed their takeover of the club in 2021 and changed the trajectory of the club both on and off the pitch.
Now Hollywood news and capturing the hearts of American fans thanks to the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, everybody seems to want a piece of the Wrexham story.
Wrexham have matched the off-field rise with on-field success, achieving back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One.
Paul Mullin on Wrexham love
Owners McElhenney and Reynolds make plenty of headlines but Paul Mullin has made himself a Wrexham hero during his time at the club.
Mullin was arguably the first real statement signing of the McElhenney and Reynolds era.
Mullin had just fired Cambridge United to promotion from League Two, smashing 32 goals in a stunning campaign.
Yet rather than continue with Cambridge into League One, Mullin dropped two divisions to join Wrexham in the National League.
The deal has seen Mullin scored 108 goals in 151 games for Wrexham whilst seeing his profile sky-rocket thanks to ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
Mullin has now told BBC Sport that his time at Wrexham has been so special that he would now support the club at the end of his career.
Mullin is a lifelong Liverpool fan but claims his allegiance ‘would change’ in favour of Wrexham whenever he hangs up his boots.
The striker added that he ‘absolutely’ loves Wrexham and feels completely attached to the club having spent more than three years at the STōK Cae Ras.
“I used to watch Liverpool home and away, and go all over the world,” said Mullin. “But that would change if my career ended tomorrow.
“I’d be going to watch Wrexham everywhere. I absolutely love the place for everything it’s given me and the support the fans have given me.
“I’ve been here long enough now, Wrexham’s become part of me. I’m really attached to this club. So I always want to do well,” he added.
Mullin looking to hit form
Mullin scored against Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon and is now looking to find some form.
A slow start to the season was expected as Mullin underwent surgery over the summer and was ruled out of pre-season.
Mullin came back in August but looked a little rusty as he make his return.
Now ‘back to his best’ in training according to Phil Parkinson, Mullin looks set to start against his former club Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.
Mullin will be looking for more and more goals this season as he finally looks to make an impact in League One.
Having left his level to join Wrexham in 2021, Mullin will be desperate to show that he can shine at this level – and Wrexham fans will be right behind him all the way.
