Phil Parkinson makes ‘really sharp’ claim about Paul Mullin in Wrexham training, latest absence explained

Wrexham beat Northampton Town on Saturday afternoon but Paul Mullin was nowhere to be seen in a 2-0 victory.

Wrexham may have struggled on the road this season but Phil Parkinson is enjoying a decent run away from home right now.

Wins at Crawley Town and Port Vale were followed by a home win over Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Trophy.

Away from home again on Saturday, Wrexham eased past Northampton Town with a 2-0 victory at Sixfields.

January signing Sam Smith grabbed his first goal in a Wrexham shirt before Ollie Rathbone made it 2-0.

Wycombe Wanderers only drew this weekend, so Wrexham have closed the gap to second place to just two points.

Phil Parkinson on Paul Mullin

Wrexham’s response to losing at home to Stevenage in January has been brilliant.

Four games, four wins across all competitions and Wrexham are on the march once again.

Kevin Nolan has praised the Wrexham squad and Parkinson certainly has great attacking options at his disposal.

Smith has hailed strike partner Jay Rodriguez whilst Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher were called upon from the bench.

Paul Mullin was nowhere to be seen though, not even making the bench as Wrexham beat the Cobblers.

Mullin has been out injured of late but Parkinson has now confirmed to The Leader that he was simply left out against Northampton.

Parkinson claims that Mullin is fit and raring to go, even looking ‘really sharp’ in training ahead of Saturday’s trip.

However, Parkinson wanted to keep Smith and Rodriguez up top with Fletcher and Marriott on the bench, meaning Mullin simply missed out.

“Mulls is fine, he’s fit,” said Parkinson.

“He trained well last week, he looked really sharp the back end of the week. But I wanted to go with Fletch and Jack on the bench.

“I wanted to get the balance of the bench right and I felt we did that,” he added.

Paul Mullin can still have a big say in Wrexham promotion push

It’s easy to think that the end is in sight for Mullin at Wrexham.

That would have sounded bizarre this time a year ago but life in League One has been difficult for Mullin.

The goals haven’t flowed as freely as hoped and Wrexham’s goal hero now finds himself out of the squad even when fit.

Still, Wrexham fans will support Mullin until the very end of his time at the STōK Cae Ras – no matter when that comes – and beyond.

Mullin was prolific in the promotion run-in this time a year ago and he will be desperate to force his way back in and play a key role once again.

Mullin’s stunning goal against Blackpool showed the quality he can still provide at this level – and Parkinson will hope to unlock that class once again before the season ends.
