Wrexham will head into 2025 sitting second in the League One table after beating Wigan Athletic 2-1 at the STōK Cae Ras on Sunday afternoon.
Wrexham needed a strong festive period after frustrating draws against Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers.
Paul Mullin dazzled Wrexham fans with his stunning goal in the 2-1 Boxing Day win over Blackpool and Phil Parkinson was chasing another win on Sunday.
Wigan Athletic visited the STōK Cae Ras on Sunday with captain Jason Kerr starting just months after snubbing Wrexham.
Ryan Barnett fired Wrexham ahead but Joe Hugill’s header levelled it up and appeared to give Wigan a share of the spoils.
Wrexham found a winner late in the day though with Steven Fletcher converting James McClean’s cross in added time.

Phil Parkinson praises George Dobson
This wasn’t always pretty from Wrexham but after those draws against Cambridge and Bristol Rovers, the two home wins over Blackpool and Wigan are a major boost.
Wrexham took advantage of Wycombe Wanderers losing at Charlton Athletic and now sit second heading into 2025.
Phil Parkinson has hailed Fletcher for his performance with the Wrexham substitute making his presence felt.
Parkinson has also paid tribute to midfielder George Dobson for his battling performance in the Wrexham engine room.
Speaking on Wrexham Matchday Live, Parkinson highlighted that Dobson typified exactly what Wrexham seek in the transfer market.
Parkinson wants character and leadership in tough situations, believing that Dobson provided that against Wigan.
That insight into Wrexham’s approach is certainly interesting ahead of the January window with Parkinson no doubt hoping to find a few more Dobsons.
“In terms of character and mentality, we’ve always kind of had strength of character as one of our key recruitment strategies because when games are like that, that’s when the character stands strong and Dobbo typified that, particularly in the second half for us,” he said Parkinson.
Wrexham will look for more quality in January
Wrexham’s final game of 2024 has now been and gone with fans no doubt looking ahead to 2025 – and that starts with January.
The transfer window is just days away from opening and Wrexham will surely look for new signings.
Wrexham made eight signings over the summer and another four free agents have arrived since the summer window closed.
Shaun Harvey claims Wrexham can spend again in January and Parkinson has admitted talks with agents over potential signings.
Reports suggest that Wrexham want another striker and Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford has been linked with a move to Wrexham.
Parkinson’s comments highlight that Wrexham will be looking at the character as much as the talent for any potential signing and the aim will be to add top talents who can aid a real promotion push in 2025.
