Wrexham appear to have a new signing arriving soon in Liberato Cacace, with reports that the Dragons have agreed to sign the Kiwi from Serie B side Empoli this summer.

Despite being on the other side of the world, Wrexham look to have closed a deal for Liberato Cacace to sign and become the third signing of the summer transfer window so far.

Wrexham were first linked with Cacace earlier in the summer. But at the time it looked like one of those rumours, with a rather obscure player, that could quickly pass

But the last 24 hours have seen Wrexham agree a deal to sign Cacace from Empoli, with the former Wellington Phoenix man looking set to make a multi-million move to the Racecourse.

It’s understood that Wrexham are paying £4million to sign Cacace which will make him the club’s record signing; trumping the £2million that Wrexham paid for Sam Smith last January.

Phil Parkinson explains where Wrexham are at with the Liberato Cacace deal

So far this summer, Wrexham have signed two new players in Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward. Hardie scored on his Wrexham debut and looks like a really quality signing for next season whilst Wrexham fans are divided over Ward’s arrival, though he looks a useful signing if nothing else.

Speaking to New Zealand outlet Stuff, Parkinson has now given an update on Cacace and where a deal for the 33-time New Zealand international currently stands.

The Dragons boss explained: “Libby is obviously a player we’ve looked at. It’s not finalised as of yet but I’ve spoken to Libby and I love his character and his personality. If we can get the signing completed he’s a player who will fit in with the culture we’ve created at Wrexham.”

What James McClean says about Wrexham new boy Liberato Cacace

With current left-back James McClean among the Wrexham players out of contract in 2026, many might assume that Cacace is the long-term heir to the club captain.

And McClean has also spoken to the press in New Zealand. The 36-year-old McClean was also asked about the signing of Cacace and he said that he and his Wrexham teammates will welcome him with open arms, with McClean himself relishing the competition.

He said: “I know he did quite well at [Italian side] Empoli last season, but I wouldn’t say I know very much more than that.

“This club’s moving forward all the time – the more you go up the divisions, the better players you’re going to sign.

“If he does sign, we’ll welcome him with open arms like we always do, and we’ll relish the competition for places because it’s only healthy.”

This summer, it’s been reported that Wrexham have a £25million transfer budget and Cacace arriving will take a decent chunk out of that, though Parkinson surely has enough to go about improving his squad in time for the start of the new season.

Wrexham’s game against Wellington Phoenix kicks off at 6am UK time.
