Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has recently dropped summer signing Conor Coady from his starting XI, despite a strong start at the club.

Conor Coady was one of 13 summer signings for Wrexham, and the former Liverpool and Wolves man started very well in the Championship.

Wrexham fans applauded Coady on his debut for the club in the 2-1 defeat against Southampton on the opening day of the season back in August.

Since then, the 32-year-old has made five Championship appearances for Phil Parkinson’s side. But Coady hasn’t played in any of the last four games now.

And for Wrexham’s 1-1 draw against Derby County last weekend, Coady was left out of the matchday squad entirely, with Dan Scarr coming in.

Conor Coady understands Wrexham axe, says Phil Parkinson

Speaking to Leader Live ahead of Wrexham’s Championship crunch match with Birmingham City on Friday night, Parkinson spoke about Coady and Scarr and why he opted to drop Coady for the game against Derby, before bringing him back into the squad against Leicester City at the expense of Scarr.

Parkinson said Coady understood the decision, saying: “I just went with Scarry at the weekend. I thought Scarry did really well against Reading on Tuesday and it’s tough if you’re just playing a team who’s got a clean sheet but Conor understood that.”

Scarr was left out of the matchday squad as Wrexham drew 1-1 with Leicester City in midweek.

What is Wrexham’s strongest defensive line up right now?

After a summer overhaul, Parkinson has some very good options in defence and right across the pitch: against Leicester, Wrexham had a £10million player on the bench in Nathan Broadhead and an £8million player in Callum Doyle.

Lewis Brunt has returned to the Wrexham XI following his strong performance in the Carabao Cup win over Reading last month. He’s partnered Dom Hyam and Max Cleworth in the back-three in the last two games.

On the right, Issa Kabore has that spot locked down, whilst Ryan Longman has been quietly impressing on the left side of defence.

Doyle and Coady are two very good options to call upon and Scarr is also there if anyone gets injured. For Parkinson, he’s got a few nice selection problems across the pitch right now.

Wrexham’s game against Birmingham City kicks off at 8pm at the Racecourse on Friday night.
