Phil Parkinson warned he’s ‘absolutely obsessed’ with one thing, it could cost Wrexham Championship survival

Wrexham have delivered on their promise to attack the transfer market this summer as they prepare for their first Championship campaign since 1982.

Phil Parkinson has brought in six players so far this window with Lewis O’Brien breaking Wrexham records in his £5m move from Nottingham Forest.

The Red Dragons are not finished yet and although the squad is in need of trimming, Wrexham have held talks with Christian Eriksen.

Wrexham are interested in Juan Portilla from Argentinian outfit Talleres but Parkinson has been warned over one particular aspect of his recruitment at the club.

Phil Parkinson told to focus on Wrexham transfers away from striker position

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Second Tier’ podcast, EFL expert Ryan Dilks has expressed his belief that the Red Dragons have focussed too much on strengthening their forward options in recent windows.

Dilks stated: “It’s nice to see Wrexham sign someone who’s not a striker. They’re absolutely obsessed with strikers, aren’t they? They’ve already got Ryan Hardie. They’ve just signed Josh Windass.

“They’ve apparently got £10m going spare to sign another one and that’s on top of the guys they’ve already got Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott, Modou Faal.

“Flippin heck lads, how many do you need? It sounds like they’re going for the 1-1-8 formation next season. Just play all the strikers they’ve got.

“But yeah on a serious note, I’ve been looking at Wrexham’s squad thinking the rest of this team, other than the front line, needs improving here. Come on shift your focus elsewhere.”

Wrexham struggled to find the right combination up top last season until they finally settled on Smith and Rodriguez to fire them to promotion in the second half of the season.

This time around, Parkinson once again has a wealth of options to choose from but he will want to find his preferred partnership as soon as possible.

Wrexham forwards will depart to allow room for one more major signing

As mentioned, Wrexham want to spend £10m on a striker before the window closes but in order for that to happen, there has to be significant departures.

Ollie Palmer has been told to leave by Parkinson and young striker Modou Faal is also set to be loaned out in order to gain first-team experience.

Jack Marriott had surgery on his appendix whilst on the pre-season tour down under and could now find his place in jeopardy upon return.

Even Jay Rodriguez may look at the striker situation and begin to fear about the amount of playing time he might receive next season.

The Wrexham squad has been bolstered in midfield with the acquisitions of O’Brien and George Thomason, however, there are concerns over the depth of centre backs.

The Red Dragons prided themselves on keeping clean sheets last season and will want to bring that solidity into the Championship to boost their chances of survival.
