As Wrexham continue their rise up the EFL ladder, more and more players are becoming surplus to requirements.

Wrexham let eight players leave in the summer of 2024, some of whom have fared much better than others.

It was a similar story following the close of the 2024/25 campaign as well, which saw the Dragons promoted to the Championship.

Rob McElhenney commented on Steven Fletcher leaving Wrexham this month, with his contract not set to be renewed.

Fletcher is one of eight stars who are now going to depart at the end of June when their contracts expire, the club has already confirmed via their retained list.

But those eight names are not the only ones that fans have had to say goodbye to in 2025.

Rob McElhenney on Wrexham January exits

Wrexham made three signings in the 2025 winter transfer window – Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez and Ryan Longman.

However, the club also let a number of players leave, with McElhenney sending a message to Anthony Forde after he found a new club.

Forde was one of three players to leave Wrexham permanently in the January transfer window, along with Billy Waters and James Jones.

Now, in the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham, which was released in the UK on Friday, McElhenney has commented on those departing stars.

He said: “It’s very hard because not only to become so close with them, but because you ask them to do a job and they did that job for you, and they recognise, they might be promoting themselves out of a job.”

Phil Parkinson has said more players will leave Wrexham

After already confirming eight players will not be at the club come the start of 2025/26, more exits are expected to take place this summer.

The Welsh outfit have 27 players aged 21 or above on their books right now, with Championship squad rules only allowing for 25 to be registered.

Speaking in May, Phil Parkinson said players will leave Wrexham to make room for new signings.

He said: “It goes without saying that as the summer and pre-season progress, there are players who will want a move themselves.

“A little bit similar to Sam Dalby and Jordan Davies’ situation last year.

“As much as the lads love being at Wrexham, there are players who haven’t figured as much this season who will be thinking ‘for my own career, I need to get playing again’.

“Sam is a great example of that, he did really well on loan at Dundee United.

“Obviously players are going to be leaving because we need to make space to bring in additions to make us competitive.”
