Wrexham won promotion over the weekend, and one pundit admits he regrets the prediction he made after the match.

Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday, cementing their name in the history books by becoming the first side to start in the fifth tier or higher and win three promotions in a row.

Attention has now turned toward the summer, with Phil Parkinson planning talks with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

The Red Dragons will be competing in the Championship for the first time since it was rebranded and it remains to be seen how they will fare.

Troy Deeney thinks Wrexham will finish in the top half of the second tier in the 2025/26 campaign.

Meanwhile, another former player turned pundit had a similar prediction over the weekend.

Sky Sports pundit regrets Wrexham top-half Championship prediction

Sam Parkin covered the Welsh outfit’s meeting with Charlton live for Sky Sports on April 26.

After promotion was confirmed for Wrexham, Parkin suggested live during the TV coverage that they could end up in the top half of the second tier.

However, speaking on the Championship Check-In podcast this week, he has now admitted to ‘regretting’ that prediction.

He said: “Well I said post-match the other day that you know they could potentially, because they’ll add to the squad I’m sure and investment will be there an obvious, that they could potentially focus on a top half finish and I was a little bit regret, regretting that when I was making my way south after the game.

“You have to wait and see, I think that’s probably my thought process. You have to see where they add.

“To flip it the other side of the coin, you get that little surprise element as well, we’ve seen it so often across their years.”

Where will Wrexham finish 2025/26

Parkin’s assessment of investment is spot on, with Wrexham having nearly £39m (minus losses from 2024/25) available to spend in the summer before they preach the PSR rules.

Right now, it is hard to predict where the Red Dragons will end up because there are expected to be a lot of new faces arriving in Wales over the coming months.

But Wrexham are likely to be aggressive in the market, though not quite as aggressive as their fellow League One promotion winners, Birmingham City.

The 2025 summer transfer window dates have already been confirmed, with the Reds able to sign players from June 1 to June 10 and then from June 16 to September 1.

This split has been put in place so clubs can register new players for the Club World Cup this summer.
