Wrexham have tasted defeat for the first time in League One this season having been beaten 3-1 away at Birmingham City on Monday night.
Wrexham headed to St Andrew’s in decent form having racked up four clean sheets in a row and four wins from the first five league games of the season.
Phil Parkinson will have been dreaming of another victory and Jack Marriott fired Wrexham into an early lead as Birmingham City were left stunned.
Wrexham had control of the game in the first 20 minutes but saw Jay Stansfield fire Birmingham level before heading home a second after the break.
Tomoki Iwata bagged number three from long range as Wrexham fell to a 3-1 defeat and lost the unbeaten start to the League One season.
Sky Sports pundit on Wrexham striker Paul Mullin
Celebrities were the focus for many as Tom Brady cheered on Birmingham whilst David Beckham was sat in the stands alongside Brady.
Parkinson won’t have cared at all about that but will have been fearing the worst for striker Paul Mullin at one stage.
Mullin came off the bench in the second half as Wrexham chased the game and he had one shot on target with a curling effort which Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved comfortably.
Mullin’s main involvement was actually off the ball as he clashed with Birmingham defender Alex Cochrane.
Footage has shown that Mullin appeared set to bite Cochrane on the leg before, with Mullin laughing off the incident.
Pundit Curtis Davies wasn’t impressed though and told Sky Sports (17/09, 10:15pm) that Mullin entered the pitch ‘wound up’.
Davies thinks that Mullin will have been annoyed at not starting the game and was trying to get his season going with a strong substitute appearance against Birmingham.
The former defender seemingly feels that Mullin was too wound up and allowed that to spark the clash with Cochrane.
Davies believes that things just aren’t going Mullin’s way right now despite scoring a superb goal against Salford City last week.
“I think there’s also a level of Mullin, when he came on, he was wound up – probably because he wanted to start,” said Davies.
“I think he wants to get himself going, he wants to come in where he can score a goal, he’s come on and they’re 3-1 down. He’s probably looking at that, he really wants to get himself going for the season after scoring that worldy in the cup, but it’s not happening for him yet,” he added.
Mullin needs time to shine
Mullin certainly seemed fired up when he came on against Birmingham but he may have simply felt that he could unsettle the Blues and potentially spark a fightback.
The striker is yet to even start a league game this season having undergone surgery over the summer.
Mullin is still a touch rusty and needs some time to get back to his best and find the back of the net on a regular basis.
The quality is there and Mullin just needs some patience, especially having been a little slow to find top form after his injury-hit start to last season.
Mullin finished the campaign in great form though and Wrexham fans will be banking on the same again this season – but may want to see him staying out of trouble off the ball.
