Now a Championship side, Wrexham could be about to sign some of the biggest names that the club has ever seen.
Already this summer, there are reports that Wrexham have offered a contract to Tom Cairney worth £50,000-a-week, which would make him the club’s highest-paid player in their history.
And there’s the very definite chance that Wrexham will smash their club transfer record this summer, likely more than once, after doing so in the last January transfer window with the signing of Sam Smith.
The list of Wrexham transfer targets continues to grow ahead of the summer window opening on June 1st. And now there’s a new name being linked with a summer move to the Racecourse in Danny Ings.
It’s been rumoured that Wrexham could be in the race to sign Ings this summer ahead of the 32-year-old’s contract expiring this summer.

Danny Ings’ career so far amid links to Wrexham
Starting out at Bournemouth, Ings made his name with Burnley between 2011 and 2015 where he fired the club to Premier League promotion in 2014. Then came an unsuccessful three-season stint with Liverpool before he got back to scoring ways with a move to Southampton in 2019.
He scored an incredible 22 goals in the 2019/20 season and then 12 in the next, prompting Aston Villa to sign him for £25million in the summer of 2021. Halfway through the 2022/23 season he joined West Ham but he’s proved something of a flop with the Hammers.
The three-time former England striker is now set to become a free agent.
| Club | Ings’ record Goals/Apps |
| Bournemouth | 8/30 |
| Burnley | 43/130 |
| Liverpool | 4/25 |
| Southampton | 46/100 |
| Aston Villa | 14/52 |
| West Ham | 5/69 |
West Ham expert gives verdict on Danny Ings to Wrexham
Speaking to Wrexham Insider, West Ham expert Damien Lucas, who writes for Hammers News, gave his verdict on Ings and whether he might be a good signing for Wrexham this summer.
Lucas said: “Ings has been one in a long line of disastrous striker signings by West Ham. We have signed 56 forwards in 15 years – many of whom have struggled like Ings. But it is more often than not because they are signed without any coherent plan or thought as to whether they will work in the system/suit the team and the way we play.
“There have been occasions where Ings has deserved more chances. But then when he has been given the odd start he has failed to impress. Sometimes that will have been down to rustiness due to a lack of game time so it’s just a vicious cycle.
“His finishing is Premier League class but his time as a Premier League striker has almost certainly come to an end. That being said he could easily cut it in the Championship and I would even say it wouldn’t surprise me or other West Ham fans one bit if he dropped down and was the top scorer for a promoted side. Wrexham sounds like a perfect move for both parties.”
Asked about Ings’ injury record in the last few seasons, Lucas answered: “Ironically injuries have not been the issue for Ings at West Ham. He has stayed injury free but that’s probably because of his lack of action. I would say he would struggle to go from two-and-a-half years of hardly playing to suddenly playing a 46-game season.
“But if Wrexham share the striker role between him and another forward it could work perfectly. You wouldn’t want Ings playing three games each week but one or two games could be realistic.”
Lastly, giving a verdict on a potential move to the Racecourse, Lucas said of Ings: “I would say this is the perfect signing for Wrexham and he will smash it in the Championship if used sensibly. He’s a great character and deadly finisher when he has a run of games under his belt.
“He will also be realistic about what sort of wage he can command and money may not be his motivation for these final years of his career after earning a cool £15million in wages alone in East London over the last two-and-a-half years.”
Signing Ings this summer would certainly be a statement from Phil Parkinson’s side. The trouble would be getting him to lower his wage demands enough to sign, and also in rotating him poorly next season to ensure he’s fit to feature all year round.
