Paul Mullin has now left Wrexham after losing his place in the second half of 2024/25, which he discussed in the latest season of Welcome to Wrexham.

Welcome to Wrexham has been a resounding success, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ series bringing the club a huge new global fanbase.

Season 4 of the documentary recently came to a close, with Episode 6 shining a light on Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

During the documentary, after so little news throughout the actual 2024/25 season, Phil Parkinson explained why he dropped Mullin and Palmer.

Both players featured in a 3-2 defeat to Stevenage on January 28, 2025, but didn’t make another League One appearance after that.

After being axed from the matchday squad, Mullin conducted a very insightful interview with the Welcome to Wrexham crew.

Welcome to Wrexham showrunner on Paul Mullin interview

During the interview, Mullin spoke about trust issues with Parkinson and how he felt about losing his place.

Now, speaking to the Fearless In Devotion podcast, Welcome to Wrexham showrunner Jeff Luini has discussed the striker.

Asked if he was surprised at how candid Mullin was in the interview, he said: “Yes when he said that line ‘I don’t think I’m going to play any part of it in the Championship’ it literally made my eyes well up immediately because it was like I don’t think anyone, I didn’t expect him to be that straight up about it right and be that kind of really vulnerable.

“I think for me when I saw Sam Smith come in, this is just on a personal as a fan level not as a TV producer or what have you, when I saw Sam Smith came in I was like Mullin’s never going to make it in that team ever again, there is no way he’s going to be out there ever again.

“You’ve got Jack Marriott on the bench and he’s coming back from injury and arguably was brought in to sort of like be somebody to be there with Mullin, and it just felt like when Sam Smith came in it was like game over.

“So to hear Paul say that on camera, essentially in kind of being that upfront about the fact that he felt like he was reading between the lines there as well, that was pretty heavy —- and I was not expecting to see that at all “

What Paul Mullin said about playing in the Championship

Mullin outlined his Wrexham ambition before leaving the club in Episode 6 of the documentary.

He said: “Just to play one game in the Championship at Wrexham would be worth absolutely everything, be the icing on the cake for this story, who knows where it could end.

“I’ve enjoyed absolutely every minute here.”

Right now, he’s set to play the 2025/26 season in League One with Wigan Athletic.

However, Mullin can be recalled by Wrexham in the January transfer window and he still has another 12 months to run on his deal after the upcoming campaign draws to a close.
