The future of Paul Mullin at Wrexham has been cast into doubt heading into the final days of the transfer window.

Wrexham have had a very busy 24 hours and this has led to a lot of talk about the future of Paul Mullin.

Mullin made the move to the Racecourse Ground in 2021, signing from Cambridge United on a free transfer.

The now 30-year-old dominated League Two in the previous season and instantly hit the ground running at Wrexham.

He is now their all-time top scorer, netting over 100 goals for the Red Dragons in all competitions. But recent developments have cast his future into doubt.

Wrexham signed Sam Smith from Reading on Friday afternoon before confirming the arrival of Jay Rodriguez from Burnley a couple of hours later.

This has given Phil Parkinson issues as he must now pick between seven different centre-forward options to fill two roles.

However, one update this week has claimed that clubs have asked about signing Mullin and Ollie Palmer in the wake of Wrexham landing two new number nines.

Wrexham fans in agreement about Paul Mullin leaving

Mullin will go down in history as a Wrexham legend but, while unfortunate for the player, he just doesn’t seem to be good enough at this level.

He’s scored three League One goals and is now likely, at best, a fifth-choice option behind Smith, Rodriguez, Marriott, and Fletcher.

Despite this, when reacting to the rumours of his potential departure, Wrexham fans are hoping Mullin does not leave.

One fan wrote: “I really hope Mullin isn’t leaving.”

A second added in response to the club’s striker signings: “I’m not participating in any excitement until I know Mullin isn’t leaving, and yes I am five years old and no I’m not sorry.”

“If you are posting that Mullin is leaving please block me I can’t take it I don’t want to read that,” another stated.

A fourth added: Release a statement that Mullin isn’t leaving and then we can party like it’s 1999.”

A fifth Wrexham fan claimed: “I’d rather lose my arm than Mullin go to you lot.”

“Very said if it’s true about Mullin. Wish he could stay for life after all he’s done for us. Hopefully it’s not true. He’s better than others at the club,” a sixth wrote.

While a seventh stated: “Really hope it’s not Mullin who is going.”

What Paul Mullin has said about leaving Wrexham

The Liverpool-born forward is still under contract until 2026 and his age/previous form means he would likely fetch a higher transfer sum than Palmer this month.

However, Mullin spoke about leaving Wrexham in April 2024 and didn’t seem too open to the idea.

He stated: “Obviously, I want to play at the highest level possible. I’d love to play for Wales, the country where my nan was born. But in terms of leaving the club it’s never something I think about.

“I signed a new contract with Wrexham in January because I absolutely adore it. I come home every day and see (his son) Albi, which is the main reason I signed in the first place.”

It would be heartbreaking to many fans if he was sold but football is a cruel game and if Wrexham want to continue climbing up the EFL, they will have to keep moving on players who have previously been crucial – just as they did in the summer when the likes of Ben Tozer and Luke Young were let go.
