Wigan Athletic fans have made up their minds on Paul Mullin, maybe Phil Parkinson was right

Wrexham allowed Paul Mullin to leave the club on loan this summer, sending the prolific striker to Wigan Athletic in League One.

The time had come for Paul Mullin to leave. As much as Wrexham fans wanted him to come good again, it just wasn’t happening.

In the end, Mullin joined Wigan Athletic on loan. Since then the 30-year-old has scored once in six League One games, and twice in eight appearances in all competitions for Wigan.

At first, Wigan Athletic fans were praising Mullin’s performances. But now the Tics supporters are saying something different.

Wigan Athletic fans aren’t sold on Wrexham loan man Paul Mullin

Throughout his short time at the club, Wigan Athletic fans have given some mixed reviews of the striker. On the whole though, despite a couple of goals, Mullin doesn’t seem to have impressed his new supporters at all.

“I’m really struggling to get used to Mullin, I don’t think he’s good enough at all,” wrote one Wigan fan earlier this season.

“I’m not sold on Mullin, at all,” read a similar comment, as one Wigan Athletic fan even said: “Mullin is a pub player.”

As things stand, Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic sit in 13th place of the League One table with eight points to their name after six games.

Other fans have targeted the club’s entire striking options, not just Mullin. “Stop giving Francois and Asamoah minutes. Same with Mullin, can’t finish at this level,” posted one, as another Wigan fan added: “Mullin, Costelloe and Asamoah just aren’t good enough at this level.”

This Latics supporter even joked: “Fair play to Mullin. Have to give him credit tonight, he made it really difficult for us to watch.”

Was Phil Parkinson right about Paul Mullin all along at Wrexham?

Phil Parkinson received a lot of criticism for his handling of Mullin. He completely exiled him from the first-team picture in the second half of last season, yet gave minutes to the likes of Jay Rodriguez who never really impressed Wrexham fans.

Eventually, Parkinson explained why he dropped Mullin at Wrexham, and Ollie Palmer too. The Wrexham boss said earlier this summer: “When we brought two strikers in January, we always knew we’d have a surplus of, and people would find themselves out of the 18-man squad because you can only have seven substitutes.

“That’s the way it is. Mulls didn’t just quite get the goals, which he normally does, and I thought he had a good start to the season, and his general performances were decent, but the goals just didn’t come, and we just needed more from the player in that number nine role.”

Now after seeing Mullin struggle to get going again with Wigan Athletic, and reading how poorly the bulk of Wigan fans rate Mullin so far, it may suggest that Parkinson was right to exile Mullin and replace him in January.

There’s still plenty of time for Mullin to get back in form though and plenty of time for him to prove his doubters wrong.
