Wrexham have been criticised in the last 24 hours for a decision they have now changed their stance on.

Wrexham play Sheffield Wednesday in a 3pm kick-off on Saturday, August 23.

Ahead of the tie, protests were planned by the Owls’ Supporters Trust, but they had confirmed via social media that Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s club were set to prevent them from bringing banners into the stadium as they were “considered to carry ‘political connotations’.”

Wrexham fans criticised the decision from their club, which has now been overturned.

Wrexham statement on Sheffield Wednesday protest

Wrexham’s Supporters Trust, the previous owners prior to Reynolds and Mac taking charge, issued a statement regarding the Sheffield Wednesday banners.

In the statement, they called ‘on the Club to reconsider’ and allow Owls fans to bring their banners as planned.

Now, on Friday afternoon, Wrexham have released a message on X/Twitter, confirming they are ‘supportive of the display of a large banner’ in the away end on Saturday.

They wrote: “Wrexham AFC can confirm that, following an internal review and consultation with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust, the Wrexham Supporters Trust and other stakeholders, the Club is supportive of the display of a large banner in a safe and appropriate way in the away supporters’ section at our match against Sheffield Wednesday.

“As a Club whose own survival has depended on the actions of our supporters, we remain committed to listening to fans and ensuring that community and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. We look forward to welcoming both sets of supporters and wish everyone attending tomorrow’s game a safe and enjoyable matchday.”

Why are Sheffield Wednesday protesting vs Wrexham

Like Wrexham pre-Rob and Ryan, the Owls are struggling under their current owner.

Fans want Dejphon Chansiri to sell their club, but at present, a potential sale does not appear close.

The Owls have been handed multiple EFL embargoes this summer amid issues with payments, as per the Telegraph.

The financial problems at the club have led to many of their top names leaving.

Josh Windass terminated his contract and has since joined Wrexham, while Michael Smith, previously linked to Dragons, has moved to Preston North End for free.
