Following Wrexham’s draw with Cardiff City, the EFL Cup tie has already been branded as a ‘classic’ in the making.
Wrexham have drawn Cardiff City in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, marking the first encounter of the two sides since 2002.
A large period of time in the National League before Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac took over at the club meant that encounters with the Bluebirds were nonexistent, but for the first time in 23 years, a memorable clash between two Welsh powerhouses will now take place.
At this stage of the competition, there was a high likelihood that Wrexham would be handed a draw against a Premier League side, but the prospect of facing off against Cardiff City is set to be far more exciting for the long-term Red Dragons’ supporters.

Wrexham fans react to blockbuster EFL Cup draw with Cardiff City
Following the confirmation that Wrexham will host Cardiff City at the Racecourse Ground in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, supporters took to social media.
It is safe to say that the majority of the supporters were ecstatic to see Wrexham face off against Cardiff City, with there being a large portion of the fanbase who may not have even been alive for the two clubs’ previous meeting.
Reacting on X, one Wrexham fan said: “This is arguably better (than a Premier League draw). Competitive game and will be a mint atmosphere.”
Another supporter reacted: “If you wanted a Prem side then go down the road and watch Liverpool! Much rather this tie.”
It was also branded as a ‘great’ and ‘cracking’ tie for Wrexham, which is destined to be a ‘classic’ at the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham have a great opportunity to chase EFL Cup history
There was a high prospect of it being the end of the road for Wrexham in the EFL Cup, with many Premier League sides waiting in the next round.
However, aside from the added bite that comes with a Welsh derby, Wrexham will be facing off against a League One side at home, so they will be feeling confident about their chances.
Wrexham’s highest finish in the EFL Cup saw them reach the quarter-finals against Liverpool in the 1977/78 season, and they hadn’t progressed past the third round since then.
It is still unlikely that Wrexham could get past the quarter finals, but following a favourable tie against Cardiff City, there is every chance that this feat could be matched this season.
