One Wrexham player may have doubts over his importance at the club following Phil Parkinson’s recent decision.

Wrexham endured a rocky start to the 2025/26 Championship season, but finally have a win under their belt after a 2-0 smash-and-grab victory against Millwall.

The Red Dragons went home after a brilliant win in the English capital, but it was a bittersweet moment after the injury sustained by Danny Ward in added time.

It is expected that Wrexham goalkeeper Ward will be out of action for some time, which will be a huge blow to the Welsh international and Phil Parkinson.

Parkinson sought to cushion the blow of Ward’s absence by bringing in the capable hands of goalkeeper Reuben Egan on a six-month contract, which was officially confirmed by the club on Wednesday evening.

Wrexham boss Parkinson worked proactively to find a solution to the injury sustained by Ward, and it will surely leave one Red Dragons player finally understanding that he is surplus to requirements at the club.

Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton will be questioning Phil Parkinson’s decision to sign Reuben Egan

Callum Burton signed a new contract at Wrexham in July, and after the news was confirmed, Parkinson said: “I’m pleased that Callum has signed, he did well last season and he was unfortunate to get injured. Callum is a key component in our goalkeeping department and his value cannot be underestimated.”

However, the Wrexham goalkeeper, after Reuben Egan’s arrival, will surely be questioning if Parkinson truly believes that he is ‘key’ to his plans, especially if Egan slots ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 29-year-old has only featured on the bench in the EFL Cup, with Parkinson making it clear that he views the shot-stopper as third choice behind Danny Ward and Arthur Okonkwo, but with the recent injury news at the Racecourse Ground, Burton would have hoped that he could be entrusted as the back-up goalkeeper.

Since his 2024/25 arrival, his game time has been severely limited, but he did show his quality in a run of four League One games, where he conceded just one goal before suffering a cruel injury.

Callum Burton may regret signing Wrexham contract

While we do not know the extent of game time that was promised to Callum Burton when he pledged his future to the Racecourse Ground, it would be surprising that a goalkeeper of his talent and age would be content with sitting as the third-choice option.

Burton has shown plenty of promise in his career, having played a notable part in Plymouth Argyle’s promotion to the Championship before signing for Wrexham, and that would hold him in good standing to potentially receive a move to the third tier, where he could have more guarantees over game time.

It is always a challenge for Phil Parkinson to manage such a bloated squad, but surely Burton should not be tossed to the side as he has been so far in the 2025/26 season.
