Wrexham stunned the rest of the Championship this summer, signing 13 new players and spending almost £40million in a single window.
It was widely expected that Wrexham would spend big this summer. Though few would anticipate the Dragons racking up almost £40million in spending, and spending £10million on Nathan Broadhead alone.
Then, Wrexham signed three new players on deadline day in Ben Sheaf, Issa Kabore and Dom Hyam.
Sheaf cost Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac another £6.5million whilst Hyam arrived for £2.7million. Kabore meanwhile comes on loan from Manchester City.
It’s a sign of just how far the Dragons have come in the last few years. But many have questions about some of the club’s signings and spending this summer, and one summer signing might even be questioning his decision to arrive at the Racecourse this summer.

George Thomason already faces uphill battle at Wrexham
Phil Parkinson overhauled his midfield department this summer. Sheaf no doubt starts when he’s ready to do so, along with Lewis O’Brien who has looked sharp since his summer move from Nottingham Forest. But who the third midfielder is in the middle of the park remains to be seen.
There are certainly a lot of options to fill that role: George Dobson, Matty James, Harry Ashfield, Elliot Lee, Ollie Rathbone when he’s back from injury, and George Thomason too.

Wrexham signed Thomason from Bolton Wanderers in a £1.2million deal earlier in the summer. But the 24-year-old is yet to make his debut for the Dragons owing to a thigh injury which looks set to keep him out of action for a while yet.

Phil Parkinson is going to have to be ruthless at Wrexham
For the next Championship game against QPR, the midfield selection in particular will be very interesting to see.
Assuming Sheaf starts straight away, one of Dobson or James is going to be dropped and it would be very harsh on either player as both have been good so far this season.
And both would likely be next in line to come in should there be a change in midfield. But with only three spots up for grabs and a horde of central midfielders at the club, Thomason and maybe even the likes of Rathbone and Ashfield too may be thinking when they’ll play any first-team football.
Ashfield was linked with a loan move from Wrexham this summer and it might have been better if he had left temporarily. Also, there were reports that Wrexham wanted to sell Lee, though nothing ever materialised.
In the next few weeks we’ll find out who’s not in contention and who is. For Thomason though, it’s looking like it could be a real battle to get in the XI.
