Wrexham were sad to say goodbye to an incredible servant in Steven Fletcher earlier this summer.

The veteran striker was not offered a new contract at the club and was released alongside the likes of Mark Howard and Jordan Davies.

Rob McElhenney was devastated by Fletcher’s exit after the former Scottish international became such an inspirational influence in the dressing room.

However, Fletcher left the club on good terms and the Wrexham owners now have an unexpected chance to bring him back to North Wales once again.

Wrexham could offer Steven Fletcher vacant academy manager role

Andy Lowe departed Wrexham with ‘immediate effect’ for ‘personal reasons’ having done a magnificent job in building the club’s academy.

Wrexham’s academy progression has been a huge part of their recent success and are now producing talented players such as Harry Ashfield for the first team.

Fletcher is yet to make a decision on his future upon his release and may still want to continue his playing days.

However, being such a respected figure at the club and having given advice to a number of teammates in the last couple of seasons, the 38-year-old would be an ideal candidate to take the role.

A huge part of the club’s future plans to be sustainable involves the development of young players and Fletcher would be able to pass on his wisdom and experience to the next generation.

Ben Tozer and Mark Howard could also be candidates for Wrexham academy manager

Having built such strong relationships at the club, it would make sense for the decision makers at the club to carefully consider the next appointment as academy manager.

Former players such as Howard and Ben Tozer know the club inside out and already have a knowledge of the young talent coming through at the club.

Tozer’s recent retirement means he is now looking for his next career move and would be another inspirational figure for the youngsters to look up to.

If the Red Dragons want to continue their progression through the Football League, it is vital they produce homegrown talent and the academy manager is huge in producing that.
