Why Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could sell Wrexham ‘sooner rather than later’

Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club for just £2million in 2020. Little did they know the club was a gold mine.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could never have dreamt of the level of success they’d have as Wrexham co-owners when they arrived at the club in late 2020. The fans wouldn’t have believed either if you’d said they’ve be playing Championship football in 2025.

But here we are. Wrexham have been promoted from League One, earning a third-straight promotion in the process. Now they’re gearing up for a return to the second tier of English football after a 40 years hiatus.

And the journey is only just beginning. Wrexham are tipped to stabilise in the Championship next season but a forth-straight promotion seems highly unlikely. Still, Reynolds predicted Wrexham to be in the Premier League inside 10 years and that dream is still on track.

But how much longer he and McElhenney might be involved with the club remains to be seen.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could sell Wrexham ‘sooner rather than later’

Speaking at the start of April, former player and now pundit Joe Jacobson gave his verdict on Wrexham and Birmingham City, and their futures, with Blues also having an element of Hollywood behind the scenes with Tom Brady a minority owner at Birmingham City.

And Jacobson predicted that Reynolds and McElhenney will sell Wrexham ‘sooner rather than later’. He compared them to Birmingham City suggesting that the latter seem to have a longer-term plan in place.

Jacobson said: “But I think Birmingham have a better chance of getting up there, with the bigger infrastructure behind them.

“Just the murmurings of the guys at Wrexham – I feel like at some point they’d sell sooner rather than later, whereas the Birmingham one seems like they’ve got a really long-term plan now.”

And the latest valuation of Wrexham may well prompt Reynolds and McElhenney to take some profit off the table, if not all of it.

Wrexham’s valuation has skyrocketed after promotion to the Championship

Bought for just £2milllion, it’s now thought that Wrexham is worth a lot more. A whole lot more. Speaking recently football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggested Wrexham is now worth £150million following a third-straight promotion.

Maguire said: “I suspect promotion was factored into the original valuation to a degree, but with the brand connection to the owners and now being 46 games away from the Premier League, that could add on another 50% to the value.

“Ipswich were valued at £100m in February 2024 [before promotion to the Premier League in May] so a good start to the season could push Wrexham above that by 50% or more due to the Ryan and Rob factor.”

A £150million valuation would make for an incredible 7,400% increase on Reynolds and McElhenney’s original investment.

Sure, the pair are very much invested in the club and appear as though they want to take Wrexham all the way to the top. But that much increase in value, in such a short space of time, could be hard to ignore.

Jacobson’s prediction may well come true after promotion and the latest valuation of the club. In truth, few could blame Reynolds and McElhenney for taking such profit.
