Wrexham are in the process of completing a summer of change as they prepare for their first Championship campaign in 43 years.

Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the season and was swiftly joined out the exit door by Will Boyle after the defender joined Shrewsbury Town.

Parkinson explained Boyle’s departure as he looks to decrease his squad numbers before making more movements in the transfer market.

Wrexham are in talks with Stuart Armstrong over a move to the Racecourse Ground and Wrexham Insider has analysed the impact on the current squad that Armstrong’s potential arrival would have.

Winners from a Stuart Armstrong transfer to Wrexham

Sam Smith

Sam Smith will be watching Wrexham’s progress with Armstrong eagerly as the striker is desperate for a creative midfielder to join the ranks this summer.

Armstrong has played some of his best football as a number ten and whilst he has moved into a deeper role during the latter stages of his career, his passing range is still top drawer.

Smith has a point to prove in the Championship next season and having a provider with the quality of Armstrong will only serve to be a positive for the 27-year-old forward.

Ollie Rathbone

Ollie Rathbone was outstanding during his first season in North Wales but will also be keen on Armstrong joining him in the midfield ranks.

The 28-year-old scored eight goals from midfield last season and will be relied upon again next season to chip in during the Championship campaign.

Rathbone has backed Wrexham to do well in the second tier but will be relieved that the creative burden will not just fall on him from deep with the arrival of Armstrong.

Losers from a Stuart Armstrong transfer to Wrexham

Elliot Lee

Elliot Lee had a frustrating second half of the season for the Red Dragons, despite finishing as the club’s top scorer in all competitions.

The midfielder was involved in a car accident and the effects saw him miss a few games before the 30-year-old struggled to get back into Parkinson’s team.

Lee has been told to leave Wrexham this summer and find a club where he would be a regular starter and the signing of Armstrong may just push him to do that.

George Dobson

George Dobson has never played in the Championship and must be wondering whether that is going to continue with continued interest in a number of midfield targets.

Dobson was superb for Wrexham last season and his energy and aggressive approach from midfield was a key component of the charge to promotion.

There are doubts about his ability to replicate that in the second tier and Armstrong would provide stern competition for a place in the side.

It would be unlikely that Dobson is sold this summer, however, he may not be a regular starter as he was last campaign.

Matty James

Matty James was another excellent signing from Parkinson last season on a free transfer and his experience and quality really shone through in the final few months.

James revealed his struggle to find a club before Wrexham came calling and the links to Armstrong must fill the midfielder with worry about his place in the side.

Armstrong has become accustomed to playing in a deeper midfield role and could be used in James’s role just in front of the back four.
