Wrexham’s ideal £15.7m starting XI after three more summer transfers arrive in dream window

Wrexham will need to improve their squad even more if they are to compete in the Championship next month.

Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward have joined the Red Dragons in the last month, though the latter isn’t expected to feature heavily.

However, more signings are still expected at the Racecourse Ground before the opening game of the season.

Wrexham face Southampton in their opening-day clash, and we have now taken a look at what an ideal starting eleven would look like if three more transfers happen.

Dream Wrexham XI

Arthur Okonkwo

As already mentioned, Wrexham have signed Danny Ward this summer, though he’s not expected to displace Arthur Okonkwo as the number one.

Should Okonkwo compete at the African Cup of Nations midway through the season, Ward could come in to fill the void, but the former Arsenal man should keep his place for the most part.

Lewis Brunt

After arriving from Leicester City last summer, Lewis Brunt took some time to earn a regular starting berth.

However, he eventually established himself as an important figure and should keep his place in the eleven.

Alfie Jones

The Red Dragons have been targeting centre-back reinforcements this summer, with an experienced option to play in the centre of the back three eyed.

On this front, Wrexham are eyeing Alfie Jones of Hull City and could pay the Tigers £3m for the experienced Championship stopper.

Max Cleworth

Max Cleworth is one of the few players still at the club following Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s takeover.

He was exceptional across 2024/25, scoring seven and assisting two in League One.

Cleworth won a Wrexham award for his efforts last term and will hopefully make the step up to the Championship with ease.

Ryan Longman

Ryan Longman arrived at the Racecourse Ground in January from the aforementioned Hull.

It was thought he’d act as a backup to Ryan Barnett, but Longman was excellent for Wrexham in the second half of 2024/25 and already has experience in the second tier.

Liberato Cacace

Wrexham are set to sign Liberato Cacace in an initial deal worth €2.5m, though it could rise as high as £4m with bonuses.

Cacace is an exciting talent, having earned top-flight experience in the Serie A. He is also fast and powerful, which is just what the Dragons need from their wing-backs in the Championship.

George Dobson

George Dobson was signed from Charlton Athletic on a free transfer last term, playing a key role in their latest promotion run-in.

His work rate is superb, and he should be able to match the pace of Championship football.

Ollie Rathbone

Ollie Rathbone was, at least for a few weeks, Wrexham’s record signing last August.

He went on to have an amazing debut campaign in Wales, winning the Player of the Season award and having his highest-scoring campaign ever.

Josh Windass

The Dragons have been crying out for fresh legs in the attacking midfield department for some time, and their ideal signing could now be available.

Wrexham are interested in signing Josh Windass and it’s been confirmed this week that the 31-year-old, who scored 13 goals last season, has terminated his contract with Sheffield Wednesday, so he can be signed for nothing.

Ryan Hardie

Hardie was the first signing of the summer, arriving from Plymouth Argyle for £700,000 thanks to the Greens’ relegation reducing his release clause.

The striker hit double figures in the Championship last term and scored on his Wrexham debut against Melbourne Victory.

Sam Smith

Smith, at least right now, stands as the club’s record transfer following his summer move from Reading.

He only played three months’ worth of football for Wrexham in 2024/25, but still scored seven goals – nearly as many as the club’s top-scoring centre-forward (Steven Fletcher, 8).

Using Transfermarkt, the values of each player in the eleven add up to £15.7m, though it’s worth noting that Wrexham could end up paying more than their value for some players, such as Cacace
