How Paul Mullin brought a key Welcome to Wrexham figure close to tears with honest admission in Season 4

Paul Mullin left Wrexham this summer after falling out of favour during the 2024/25 season.

Wrexham won League One promotion last term, finishing in second place behind Birmingham City.

In previous years, Paul Mullin had been a key figure for the Red Dragons, netting over 100 goals for the club.

However, the Red Dragons legend lost his place in the Wrexham team during the 2024/25 campaign.

An insight into why the striker was dropped was not really provided until Season 4 of Welcome to Wrexham aired this summer, which also included some heartfelt comments from the 30-year-old.

Phil Parkinson explained why he dropped Mullin, who did not feature in the league after he scored in a 3-2 defeat to Stevenage on January 28.

Paul Mullin brought a Welcome to Wrexham showrunner close to tears

Throughout the second half of last season, we heard very little from Parkinson or Mullin regarding his position at the club.

Season 4 of the documentary shed some light on the situation, and one moment captured in the documentary brought a showrunner close to tears.

Speaking in July, Welcome to Wrexham showrunner Jeff Luini commented on Mullin and how he nearly made him cry.

When asked if he was surprised at Mullin’s comments about being dropped and not playing in the Championship, Luini responded: “Yes when he said that line ‘I don’t think I’m going to play any part of it in the Championship’ it literally made my eyes well up immediately because it was like I don’t think anyone, I didn’t expect him to be that straight up about it right and be that kind of really vulnerable.

“I think for me when I saw Sam Smith come in, this is just on a personal as a fan level not as a TV producer or what have you, when I saw Sam Smith came in I was like Mullin’s never going to make it in that team ever again, there is no way he’s going to be out there ever again.

“You’ve got Jack Marriott on the bench and he’s coming back from injury and arguably was brought in to sort of like be somebody to be there with Mullin, and it just felt like when Sam Smith came in it was like game over.

“So to hear Paul say that on camera, essentially in kind of being that upfront about the fact that he felt like he was reading between the lines there as well, that was pretty heavy —- and I was not expecting to see that at all “

Will Paul Mullin play for Wrexham in the Championship

Currently, the centre-forward is out on loan in League One with Wigan Athletic.

However, he remains under contract with Wrexham until June 2027, so could play some role next season.

Mullin can be recalled from Wigan during the 2026 January transfer window as well.

In reality, however, given the influx of new forwards that have arrived in North Wales this summer, it seems likely that the attacker will never play in the Championship for Wrexham.
