Four years ago to the day, Paul Mullin signed for Wrexham, and the rest is history.

On July 23rd, 2021, Wrexham signed Cambridge United hotshot Paul Mullin. The striker had scored an incredible 32 goals in the previous season in League Two, and surprised everyone by dropping down to the National League to sign for hopefuls Wrexham.

Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac had only been in place a short while, but already they had made the club an attractive destination. Mullin went on to score 105 goals in 165 games for the Dragons before leaving on loan for Wigan Athletic this summer.

And it looks like Mullin may have played his last game for Wrexham, as the club continues its rise up the Football League pyramid.

But the 30-year-old is undoubtedly a legend in the modern day, and there’s many hopeful fans who think he may pull on the Red Dragons kit once again.

Paul Mullin needed just two days to decide about a move to Wrexham

Four years ago to the day, Mullin gave his first interview as a Wrexham player. And in his first interview, he spoke positively about the club, manager Phil Parkinson and owner Mac, who he’d spoken to before agreeing to join from Cambridge.

And in his interview, Mullin revealed that he only took a couple of days to decide on making the move to the Racecourse, proving how he instantly fell in love with the club and the project.

In comments that went somewhat under the radar at the time, Mullin explained: “The manager gave me a call a day or two ago and we just had to chat on the phone, and then I had a phone call from Rob, one of the owners, who talked me through the plans for the club and basically sold it to me on what his plans were for the future and where he thought the club could go and the ambition of him as an owner was sort of what attracted me to come.

How is Paul Mullin getting on at Wigan Athletic so far?

Mullin has made his debut for Wigan Athletic in a pre-season friendly match already this summer. Then in the next friendly last week, Mullin scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic in a friendly game against Liverpool’s U21s.

Latics fans are hopeful that Mullin can regain his scoring form ahead of next season and help the team to try and repeat what Wrexham did in the third tier last season. And Wigan Athletic boss Ryan Lowe has spoken positively about Mullin too.

Speaking earlier this summer, Lowe said: “Paul is 30 years of age but he looks like a 21-year-old in terms of his body and his condition. And he’s definitely got a big part to play on and off the pitch.”

Wrexham are set to play two more friendlies before opening their Championship season against Southampton on August 9th, with a friendly match against Dutch side FC Groningen scheduled for August 2nd.
