Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer was the hero once again on Tuesday night as the big striker scored two late goals as the Dragons beat Hull City in the EFL Cup.

On Tuesday night, Wrexham staged a late comeback to eventually beat Hull City in the first round of the EFL Cup. Up until the 90th minute, the Tigers were leading 3-1 before substitute Ollie Palmer scored twice in injury time.

Palmer also scored in the penalty shootout as Phil Parkinson’s side progress into the second round of the trophy. It was their first home game of the season after Wrexham lost their Championship opener against Southampton last weekend.

Next up, Wrexham play West Brom in the Championship on home soil in what will be a memorable and historic game for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s club.

Update on Ollie Palmer’s Wrexham future

During pre-season, Palmer impressed Wrexham fans with his performances in Australia, but after Wrexham signed Josh Windass and Ryan Hardie, it was widely expected that Palmer was all but gone from the club. Though his goals and his overall performance and impact on Tuesday night has certainly given Parkinson some food for thought with regards to Palmer’s future at the club.

The 33-year-old remains under contract until the summer of 2026, and so it would make sense to move him on this summer before he leaves the club for nothing. Speaking to Wrexham Insider, however, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has suggested that Palmer’s Wrexham exit could be one for the last week of the summer transfer window which closes on September 1st.

Bailey explained: “Wrexham have been trying to move Palmer all summer. He is one for the last week in window and they are going to have to pay most of his wages like Mullin. Could I see former club AFC Wimbledon? They are in League One so potentially.”

We recently revealed that Palmer has been offered to multiple clubs, including MK Dons and his former club AFC Wimbledon.

What Phil Parkinson previously said on Ollie Palmer’s Wrexham future

Palmer, along with fellow striker Paul Mullin, was exiled by Parkinson in the second half of last season. The Wrexham duo barely featured and couldn’t even make the matchday squad for the most part.

Speaking earlier in the summer, Parkinson explained why he dropped Mullin and Palmer, simply suggesting that the January arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez pushed the pair down the pecking order.

Much more recently, Parkinson explained whether or not Palmer will stay at Wrexham this summer, and Parkinson was open, suggesting that Palmer needs to leave the club in order to play regular football.

Parkinson said: “So I had a good chat with Ollie Palmer this week. He needs to go and play, he knows that. Ollie has been brilliant for us, a great servant, but he’s ready to go and play.”

It’ll be very interesting to see if Palmer features in the game against West Brom on Saturday. Given the recent injuries to Kieffer Moore and Jay Rodriguez, Palmer may well have to be kept around purely for depth.
