More transfer misery for Wrexham as Phil Parkinson sees chances of deal for ‘brilliant’ midfielder slashed

It’s been a somewhat slow start for Wrexham in this summer’s transfer window, which is now closed for the Club World Cup.

The summer transfer window opened on June 1st and closed on June 10th, re-opening on June 16th for the remainder of the summer.

We’re yet to see any new players arrive at the Racecourse. Instead, Wrexham have released eight players, though Phil Parkinson is certainly putting the feelers out for new signings.

Earlier in the summer it was claimed that Wrexham have offered a contract to Tom Cairney, though Wrexham Insider has since revealed that Cairney would prefer to stay at Fulham, where he’s been offered a new contract.

We’ve so far seen a number of midfielders like Cairney linked: Tom Lawrence is another, along with the likes Tommy Doyle, Lewis Travis, whilst there have even been reports linking Christian Eriksen with Wrexham.

Lewis O’Brien is another name, and perhaps a much more realistic one than Eriksen.

After Tom Cairney blow, Wrexham now face uphill battle to sign Lewis O’Brien

O’Brien has been linked with a move to Wrexham this summer, in what looks like a potentially very interesting summer for the Nottingham Forest man. There are several teams interested in O’Brien who’s out of contract at Forest in the summer of 2026, seemingly with no chances of a possible way into the Reds’ first-team.

Described as a ‘brilliant’ player by Lee Trundle, O’Brien has hinted at joining Swansea City on a permanent deal after spending the second half of the 2024/25 season at the club. But the latest comes from Hull Live, who state that Hull City have now joined the race to sign O’Brien on a permanent deal this summer.

Hull Live write that O’Brien is one of the club’s ‘top transfer targets’ this summer, adding that the 26-year-old has been ‘admired for a number of seasons’ by the Humberside club. With Swansea, O’Brien played 16 times in the Championship, scoring once.

Every club linked with Wrexham transfer target Lewis O’Brien this summer

Inevitably, Swansea City are keen to re-sign O’Brien this summer, and given his previous comments a return to the club could be a formality.

Elsewhere, Valencia have been linked with O’Brien where his former Huddersfield Town boss Carlos Corberan is in charge, with the likes of Preston North End, Wrexham, and now Hull City all in the running.

After Parkinson saw his chances of signing Cairney all but end, this latest news on O’Brien really highlights just how difficult signing players is now that Wrexham are a Championship team, especially a newly-promoted one whose fortunes for next season are really unpredictable.
