Paul Mullin is underway at Wigan Athletic scoring his first League 1 goal for the club after leaving Wrexham on loan earlier this summer.

Paul Mullin is back in the goals. Last season the Wrexham hero scored just three times in the league despite boasting a total goals tally of 105 for the Dragons.

It was a difficult campaign for the striker who barely featured in the second half of the campaign after Phil Parkinson exiled him.

Later on, Parkinson explained why he dropped Mullin and also Ollie Palmer, suggesting that the January arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez were to blame.

But all seems to be forgotten now as Mullin rediscovers his scoring form with Wigan with two goals and six total appearances for the Latics.

For Mullin, the aim this season seems simple. To play football and score goals after half a season of not doing really any of those things. And speaking in a recent interview with BBC Sounds, Mullin has said that is exactly what he wants to do after leaving Wrexham on loan for Wigan.

Mullin explained his aims for this season, saying: “To play as many games as possible, to help the team in any way possible, and to get as many three points as possible. It’s a quite simple game football; keep it out of one goal, kick it towards the other, and hopefully come out with more points than anyone in the league.”

Mullin later added: “It’s a real challenge but that’s the aim of the football club, to get as many points as possible.”

Has Phil Parkinson made a mess of Wrexham’s striker department?

So far this summer, Wrexham have spent £30 million on new players. It’s an impressive haul so far, with Nathan Broadhead being the club record signing at £10 million. And whilst it’s an exciting signing, it’s one of a few risky ones for the Dragons, who have signed quite a few injury-prone players this summer.

Already, Josh Windass has picked up a muscle injury and faces several weeks on the sidelines, whilst Parkinson has explained that Broadhead has a minor calf issue which kept him out of the game on Tuesday night as Wrexham beat Preston 3-2 in the Carabao Cup.

Then there’s obviously the saga with Palmer. Parkinson has said Palmer needs to leave Wrexham to go play football, but injuries to Windass and a minor injury to Broadhead has so far kept Palmer at the club. And now Wrexham have loaned out Mullin and it would be wrong to recall him so soon.

Right now, all hopes are pinned on Kieffer Moore who is so far providing the goods. For Parkinson, despite having signed so many attacking players already this summer, another striker signing might be needed ahead of the September 1st deadline.
