‘Technical’ player benched yet again amid claims Wrexham want to sign him in January transfer window

Wrexham now have just over one week to improve their squad for the second half of the League One campaign.

The Red Dragons drew 1-1 with table-topping Birmingham City last time out – a good result but one that could see them drop down the table.

Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town will play games in hand this weekend and if both win, Wrexham will be in a much worse position when they kick off against Stevenage on Tuesday evening.

In a bid to continue their automatic promotion push in the second half of 2024/25, the club are working to get new names through the door.

Wrexham signed Ryan Longman from Hull City this week and he is most likely to provide cover at wing-back.

Meanwhile, the search for a new centre-forward amid poor form from the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer is still ongoing.

Danny Rohl leaves Wrexham target Michael Smith on the bench again

Reports emerged last week that Wrexham want to sign Michael Smith in January after previously failing to land the forward last year.

Following those links, Danny Rohl left Smith out of the matchday squad for Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Leeds United last Sunday.

The 33-year-old was then an unused substitute in midweek when the Owls drew 2-2 with Bristol City.

Wednesday are now preparing to take on Queens Park Rangers in a 3pm Championship meeting on January 25th and once more, the Wrexham target has been named on the bench.

Before links to the Red Dragons emerged, the centre-forward had played all but one of Sheffield Wednesday’s league games this season but now Smith has been dropped for a third game in a row, it could suggest a move is still on the cards.

Wrexham fans are wrong about Michael Smith

After the Wallsend-born player was tipped to move to Wales last week, Wrexham fans made their feelings clear on Smith.

Most took issue with his age and suggested he just another big man, which they already have three of in Ollie Palmer, Steven Flecther and Modou Faal.

However, we have got an expert verdict on Smith from a Sheffield Wednesday journalist and fan, who believes the forward is much more than that and was quick to highlight his ‘technical ability’.

He told us: “Smith’s biggest strength, I’d say, is that he’s an all-round striker. Many would look at Smith and simply assume that he’s just a target man who’s only good for lumping the ball up to, holding up the play, and so on.

“But he’s proved this season that he’s got much more than that. Look at his goal against Portsmouth for example. He’s got technical ability in his feet as well as being an aerial presence, and not too many strikers in the league can say that.”
